Qutb rubbed shoulders with Taha Husayn, Naguib Mahfouz, and Abd al-Nasser himself, though his Islamism originally had little to do with religion. Only in response to his harrowing experience in prison did Qutb come to regard Islam and kufr (infidelity) as oppositional, antithetical, and therefore mutually exclusive. Calvert shows how Qutb repackaged and reformulated the Islamic heritage to pose a challenge to authority, including those who claimed (falsely, he believed) to be Muslim.

The modern political idea of jihad—a violent struggle against corrupt or anti-Islamic regimes—is essentially the brainchild of one man who turned traditional Islamic precepts inside out and created the modern radical political Islamist movement. Sayyid Qutb is widely considered the guiding intellectual of radical Islam, with a direct line connecting him to Osama bin Laden. But Qutb has too often been treated maliciously or reductively-"the Philosopher of Islamic Terror," as Paul Berman famously put it in the New York Times Magazine. "This study analyzes the history of radical Islamist ideology through a critical reading of the movement's evolving discourse and its attempts to position itself as the orthodox interpretation within the broader Islamic discursive tradition. This study argues that the intellectual genealogy of radical Islamism begins with an activist reading of the Islamic tradition by the Egyptian ideologue Sayyid Qutb (1906-1966) and the popularization of his dichotomous theory of politics within the Islamist movement. Yet, as a result of Qutb's doctrinal ambiguity and his disregard for Islamic scholarship, his intellectual legacy has allowed various interpretations to develop with some that have infused Islamist discourse with radical positions on apostasy and legitimate violence. Qutb framed his activist jurisprudence as being accessible to a vanguard of Muslim revolutionaries who could reduce the acquisition of religious knowledge to its potential for political revolution. This idea of a privileged access to religious knowledge has significantly informed the doctrine and propaganda strategies of al-Qa'ida. The Jihadi-Salafi ideology of al-Qa'ida has retained Qutb's vision of a "knowledge for action" but it has also developed a strategic and complex relationship with the 'ulamā'. Al-Qa'ida and the broader Jihadi-Salafi movement have thus maintained Qutb's activist reading of the faith but eschewed his dismissal of traditional religious authority and scholarship for both ideological and strategic reasons." --
