ISBN: 0262700387
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 377

Book Description
A unique synthesis of the contemporary, Anglo-American philosophical approach with an abiding concern for classical philosophical problems. This book seeks to clarify the precise structure of self-consciousness and self-determination and elucidates their significance for our philosophical understanding of self-knowledge and human agency. The analysis challenges traditional models of theoretical self-knowledge and practical self-relation and elaborates an account of rationally grounded responsibility that jointly fulfills the demands of autonomy and authenticity.Tugendhat's study is a unique synthesis of the contemporary Anglo-American philosophical approach with an abiding concern for classical philosophical problems. It brings the methods of linguistic analysis to bear on such epistemological, moral, and metaphysical issues as the meaning and interconnections of self-knowledge, ego identity, rational self-understanding, and freedom of the will. In this context, the views of Wittgenstein, Heidegger, Mead, and Hegel are searchingly examined. The philosophical testimony of Kierkegaard, Freud, Habermas, and others is also presented and weighed. Self-Consciousness and Self-Determination is based on a series of lectures given at Heidelberg. The book is included in the series Studies in Contemporary German Social Thought, edited by Thomas McCarthy.

Intuition and Reflection in Self-Consciousness

Intuition and Reflection in Self-Consciousness PDF Author: Kitar? Nishida
Publisher: SUNY Press
ISBN: 9780887063688
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 240

Book Description
Nishida Kitaro's reformulation of the major issues of Western philosophy from a Zen standpoint of "absolute nothingness" and "absolutely contradictory self-identity" represents the boldest speculative enterprise of modern Japan, continued today by his successors in the "Kyoto School" of philosophy. This English translation of Intuition and Reflection in Self-Consciousness evokes the movement and flavor of the original, clarifies its obscurities, and eliminates the repetitions. It sheds new light on the philosopher's career, revealing a long struggle with such thinkers as Cohen, Natorp, Husserl, Fichte, and Bergson, that ended with Nishida's break from the basic ontological assumptions of the West. Throughout labyrinthine arguments, Nishida never loses sight of his theme: the irreducibility and unobjectifiability of the act of self-consciousness which constitutes the self. Extensive annotation is provided for the first time in any edition of Nishida's work. Historians of Japanese philosophy and culture, and all those interested in the interaction of Eastern and Western thought-forms, now have a document which highlights many of the cultural, psychological, and intellectual dynamics that have shaped Japanese intellectual life in one of its most fascinating and ambitious manifestations.

Self-Concept, Motivation and Identity

Self-Concept, Motivation and Identity PDF Author: Frédéric Guay
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1681231697
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 355

Book Description
The concept of the Self has a long history that dates back from the ancient Greeks such as Aristotle to more contemporary thinkers such as Wundt, James, Mead, Cooley, Freud, Rogers, and Erikson (Tesser & Felson, 2000). Research on the Self relates to a range of phenomena including self-esteem, self-concept, self-protection, self-verification, self-awareness, identity, self-efficacy, self-determination etc. that could be sharply different or very similar. Despite this long tradition of thinkers and the numerous studies conducted on the Self, this concept is still not very well defined. More precisely, it is not a precise object of study, but rather a collection of loosely related subtopics (Baumesiter, 1998). Also, in the philosophical literature, the legitimacy of the concept of “self” has been brought into question. Some authors have argued that the self is not a psychological entity per se, but rather an illusion created by the complex interplay between cognitive and neurological subsystems (Zahavi, 2005). Although no definitive consensus has been reached regarding the Self, we emphasis in this volume that the Self and its related phenomena including self-concept, motivation, and identity are crucial for understanding consciousness and therefore important to understand human behavior. Self-concept, motivation and identity: Underpinning success with research and practice provides thus a unique insight into self-concept and its relationship to motivation and identity from varied theoretical and empirical perspectives. This volume is intended to develop both theoretical and methodological ideas and to present empirical evidence demonstrating the importance of theory and research to effective practice.

Pay Attention to Your Life

Pay Attention to Your Life PDF Author: Willie M. Giles
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780972894418
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 122

Book Description
This is a book about balancing life and paying attention to four distinct but connected parts of ourselves -- heart, mind, body, and soul. These dimensions and their importance are discussed as a part of this book. Realizing that many of us are aware of the need to pay attention but sometimes unconsciously fail to do so, I decided to examine how we could become more self-aware in the specific areas that we all share and, by doing so, begin to look at our own self-determination through attention to our lives in these specific areas. The first part of the book discusses the four areas and provides ideas on what they mean to us and how we can pay closer attention to them. The second part presents a number of thoughts on paying attention to different behaviors such as our habits, motivation, relation to others, and more. The final part of the book presents, what I refer to as "attention-provoking" poetry in 30 of my original poems.

Handbook of Self-determination Research PDF Author: Edward L. Deci
Publisher: University Rochester Press
ISBN: 9781580461566
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 484

Book Description
Over the past twenty years an increasing number of researchers from various universities have been investigating motivational issues underlying the self-regulation of behavior. Using either Self-Determination Theory or closely related theoretical perspectives, these researchers have performed laboratory experiments, as well as field studies in a variety of real-world settings. In April 1999 thirty of these researchers convened at the University of Rochester to present their work, share ideas, and discuss future research directions. This book is an outgrowth of that important and fascinating conference. It summarizes the research programs of these social, personality, clinical, developmental, and applied psychologists who have a shared belief in the importance of self-determination for understanding basic motivational processes and for solving pressing real-world problem. The Politics of Self-Determination

The Politics of Self-Determination PDF Author: Timothy Leary
Publisher: Ronin Publishing
ISBN: 1579511406
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 105

Book Description
Visionary Harvard psychologist Timothy Leary became the charismatic leader of the '60s counterculture. Remembered as a pioneer of research and experimentation with psychedelic substances, he was also an author, lecturer, political dissident, and media magnet whose wit and charm captured the world's attention. In this collection of essays from Leary's early career, he presents his concept of personal responsibility for the effects of one's behavior. According to Leary, self-determining people don't blame their parents, their race, or their society; they accept responsibility for their actions, which in turn determines the responses they get from the world. These writings had an enormous impact on the humanistic psychology movement and libertarian redefinition of the doctor-patient relationship. Ronin's new offering gives readers a fascinating glimpse into Leary's ground-breaking work in this area.
