Experimental Capitalism

Experimental Capitalism PDF Author: Steven Klepper
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400873754
Category : Business & Economics
Languages : en
Pages : 280

Book Description
For much of the twentieth century, American corporations led the world in terms of technological progress. Why did certain industries have such great success? Experimental Capitalism examines six key industries—automobiles, pneumatic tires, television receivers, semiconductors, lasers, and penicillin—and tracks the highs and lows of American high-tech capitalism and the resulting innovation landscape. Employing "nanoeconomics"—a deep dive into the formation and functioning of companies—Steven Klepper determines how specific companies emerged to become the undisputed leaders that altered the course of their industry's evolution. Klepper delves into why a small number of firms came to dominate their industries for many years after an initial period of tumult, including General Motors, Firestone, and Intel. Even though capitalism is built on the idea of competition among many, he shows how the innovation process naturally led to such dominance. Klepper explores how this domination influenced the search for further innovations. He also considers why industries cluster in specific geographical areas, such as semiconductors in northern California, cars in Detroit, and tires in Akron. He finds that early leading firms serve as involuntary training grounds for the next generation of entrepreneurs who spin off new firms into the surrounding region. Klepper concludes his study with a discussion of the impact of government and the potential for policy to enhance a nation’s high-tech industrial base. A culmination of a lifetime of research and thought, Experimental Capitalism takes a dynamic look at how new ideas and innovations led to America’s economic primacy.

Book Description
Television screens in the 1980s reflected some of the most memorable programs of all time. In that decade, such critically acclaimed shows as Cheers, The Golden Girls, Hill Street Blues, Newhart, and St. Elsewhere debuted. In that same decade, iconic shows like The A-Team, Baywatch, Cagney & Lacey, Knight Rider, MacGyver,Miami Vice, and Roseanne appealed to millions of viewers. Even after these shows departed the airwaves, they live on in syndication and on DVDs, entertaining many generations of viewers. In Television Series of the 1980s: Essential Facts and Quirky Details, Vincent Terrace presents readers with a cornucopia of information about more than seventy programs from the decade. For example, did you know that Sam Malone had an ex-wife named Deborah? Or that MacGyver’s alias was Dexter Fillmore? Or Dan Fielding’s license plate on Night Court read “Hot to Trot”? These are just a handful of hundreds of fun and intriguing specifics found inside this volume. Programs from all four major networks (ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC)—as well as select syndicated programs—are represented here. This is not a book of opinions or essays about specific television programs but a treasure trove of facts associated with each show. Fromthe name of Roseanne’s diner to the title of Jessica Fletcher’s first novel, readers will discover a wealth of fascinating information that, for the most part, cannot be found elsewhere. In some cases, the factual data detailed herein is the only such documentation that currently exists on bygone shows of the era. Television Series of the 1980s is the ideal reference for fans of this decade and anyone looking to stump even the most knowledgeable trivia expert.

Single Season Sitcoms of the 1980s

Single Season Sitcoms of the 1980s PDF Author: Bob Leszczak
Publisher: McFarland
ISBN: 0786499583
Category : Performing Arts
Languages : en
Pages : 272

Book Description
As the cable TV industry exploded in the 1980s, offering viewers dozens of channels, an unprecedented number of series were produced. For every successful sitcom--The Golden Girls, Family Ties, Newhart--there were flops such as Take Five with George Segal, Annie McGuire with Mary Tyler Moore, One Big Family with Danny Thomas and Life with Lucy starring Lucille Ball, proving that a big name does not a hit show make. Other short-lived series were springboards for future stars, like Day by Day (Julia Louis-Dreyfus), The Duck Factory (Jim Carrey), Raising Miranda (Bryan Cranston) and Square Pegs (Sarah Jessica Parker). This book unearths many single-season sitcoms of the '80s, providing behind-the-scenes stories from cast members, guest stars, writers, producers and directors.
