Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics - 2 PDF Author: Raghavan Rangarajan
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9811025916
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 305

Book Description
The book presents pedagogical reviews of important topics on high energy physics to the students and researchers in particle physics. The book also discusses topics on the Quark–Gluon plasma, thermal field theory, perturbative quantum chromodynamics, anomalies and cosmology. Students of particle physics need to be well-equipped with basic understanding of many concepts underlying the standard models of particle physics and cosmology. This is particularly true today when experimental results from colliders, such as large hadron collider (LHC) and relativistic heavy ion collider (RHIC), as well as inferences from cosmological observations, are expected to further expand our understanding of particle physics at high energies. This volume is the second in the Surveys in Theoretical High Energy Physics Series (SThEP). Topics covered in this book are based on lectures delivered at the SERC Schools in Theoretical High Energy Physics at the Physical Research Laboratory, Ahmedabad, and the University of Hyderabad.

Surveys in theoretical high energy physics 1

Surveys in theoretical high energy physics 1 PDF Author: P Ramadevi
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9386279576
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
The recent discovery at the Large Hadron Collider, of what is very likely the Higgs particle, has given a fillip to research in High Energy physics. These experiments hold the promise of a glimpse of physics beyond the Standard Model, which while having been verified to great accuracy, cannot be the final theory. Uncomfortable gaps -both theoretical and experimental- remain in our understanding. Lecture notes from the SERC School in Theoretical High Energy Physics held at IIT Bombay in February 2008 are contained in this volume. Topics that were covered then are of continuing importance, more so in the light of the ongoing LHC experiment. The various chapters in the book include an extensive survey of LHC physics that together with formal aspects and models of supersymmetry, review the state of the art in our understanding of the Standard Model and beyond. The article on B Physics and CP violations add to this, while the chapter on thermal field theory reviews the formalism necessary to understand the early universe and to embark on an analysis of quark-gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions. Written in a clear pedagogic style by active researchers, this text will prepare a beginner to work in the field and at the same time will also provide useful reference material for active researchers.

An Introduction to Regge Theory and High Energy Physics

An Introduction to Regge Theory and High Energy Physics PDF Author: P. D. B. Collins
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 9780521110358
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Originally published in 1977, this book presents an extended introduction to the theory of hadrons, the elementary particles which occur in the atomic nucleus. The main emphasis is on the theory of the complex angular momentum plane 'Regge theory', which has grown from Regge's demonstration in 1959 that it is useful to regard angular momentum as a complex variable when discussing solutions of the Schrodinger equation for non-relativistic potential scattering. This theory helps to classify the many different particles which have been discovered in recent years, to explain the forces between these particles and to predict the results of high-energy scattering experiments. Regge theory thus serves as a unifying concept drawing together many different features of high-energy physics. This monograph is intended primarily for research students just beginning to concern themselves with particle physics, but more experienced workers will also find much to interest them in this detailed survey of the basic ideas and results of Regge theory.

Theories and Experiments in High-Energy Physics

Book Description
This volume contains a portion of the presentations given at the session on High Energy Physics and Astro physics of Orbis Scientiae II, held at the Center for Theoretical Studies, University of Miami, from January 20 through January 24, 1975. This, second in the new series of meetings held at the CTS, strove to implement the goals professed in the organization of Orbis Scientiae in 1974, namely to encourage scientists in several disciplines to exchange views, not only with colleagues who share similar research interests, but also to acquaint scientists in other fields with the leading ideas and current results in each area repre sented. Thus, an effort has been made to include papers in each session that discuss fundamental issues in a way which is comprehensible to scientists who are specialists in other areas. Also in keeping with the philosophy of Orbis Scientiae, the major topics each year are to be varied, with the invariant being the inclusion of developments in fundamental physics. The discussions of the current state of the art in high energy physics represented in this volume include new theories and experiments in the field. v PREFACE Special gratitude is due to the following for their contributions as organizers and moderators of the ses sions on high energy physics and astrophysics: Abdus Salam, Jogesh Pati, Karl Strauch, O. W. Greenberg, Sheldon Glashow, George Sudarshan and W. John Cocke. The editors wish to express their appreciation to Mrs. Helga Billings and Mrs.

The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Physics

The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Physics PDF Author: Eleanor Knox
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 131722714X
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 787

Book Description
The Routledge Companion to Philosophy of Physics is a comprehensive and authoritative guide to the state of the art in the philosophy of physics. It comprisess 54 self-contained chapters written by leading philosophers of physics at both senior and junior levels, making it the most thorough and detailed volume of its type on the market – nearly every major perspective in the field is represented. The Companion’s 54 chapters are organized into 12 parts. The first seven parts cover all of the major physical theories investigated by philosophers of physics today, and the last five explore key themes that unite the study of these theories. I. Newtonian Mechanics II. Special Relativity III. General Relativity IV. Non-Relativistic Quantum Theory V. Quantum Field Theory VI. Quantum Gravity VII. Statistical Mechanics and Thermodynamics VIII. Explanation IX. Intertheoretic Relations X. Symmetries XI. Metaphysics XII. Cosmology The difficulty level of the chapters has been carefully pitched so as to offer both accessible summaries for those new to philosophy of physics and standard reference points for active researchers on the front lines. An introductory chapter by the editors maps out the field, and each part also begins with a short summary that places the individual chapters in context. The volume will be indispensable to any serious student or scholar of philosophy of physics.

Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics II

Techniques and Concepts of High-Energy Physics II PDF Author: Thomas Ferbel
Publisher: Springer
ISBN:
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
The second Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held at the Roaring Brook Resort at Lake George, New York. As in the case of the first ASI, our aim was to bring together a small group of promising young ex perimenters and several outstanding senior scholars in high energy physics in order to learn about the latest trends in the field and develop stronger contacts among scientists from different countries and different backgrounds. The setting at Roaring Brook was particularly congenial and the staff, under the direction of George Green, was both friendly and efficient. The ASI was supported mainly through funds provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. It was cosponsored by the U. S. Department of Energy, Fermilab, the National Science Founda tion and the University of Rochester. A special grant from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided a valuable degree of flexibility for supporting worthy students. The scientific program of this ASI was, once again, designed primarily for advanced graduate students and recent Ph.D recipients in experimental particle physics. I believe, however, that the contents of the present volume will prove useful to an even wider audience of physicists.
