Fruit and Vegetable Storage

Fruit and Vegetable Storage PDF Author: Anthony Keith Thompson
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319235915
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 126

Book Description
This Brief reviews the effects of increasing and reducing atmospheric pressure on the postharvest life of fruit and vegetables. The text covers the common methods and technologies used and evaluates the history and benefits of hypobaric and hyperbaric storage. Both of these techniques have the potential to address quantitative and qualitative challenges in the postharvest sector of the fresh fruit and vegetables industry. Hypobaric and Hyperbaric Storage of Fruit and Vegetables reports on the effects of storage on over 45 types of fruit and vegetables, as well as on whole plants and cut flowers. As consumer demand for high quality product increases, proper postharvest storage will continue to gain in importance. The environmental conditions used in storage have a vital influence on the quality, safety and health benefits of fruit and vegetables.

Modified and Controlled Atmospheres for the Storage, Transportation, and Packaging of Horticultural Commodities

Modified and Controlled Atmospheres for the Storage, Transportation, and Packaging of Horticultural Commodities PDF Author: Elhadi M. Yahia
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781420069587
Category : Technology & Engineering

Pages : 608

Book Description
Modified atmosphere (MA) and controlled atmosphere (CA) technologies have great potential in a wide range of applications. The increasingly global nature of food production and the increased emphasis on reducing chemical preservatives and pesticides have put the spotlight on these centuries-old technologies. Yet until now, there have been very few current resources available, and none have covered all aspects. Provides extensive background on the theory and application of modified and controlled atmospheres Written by top international experts in research and industry, Modified and Controlled Atmospheres for the Storage, Transportation, and Packaging of Horticultural Commodities explores the science and application of the modified atmosphere (MA) and the controlled atmosphere (CA). It covers all technological applications, including storage, transport, and packaging for all fruits, vegetables, and ornamentals of temperate, subtropical, and tropical origin. Tracing the historical developments of these technologies, it provides information on the ideal conditions to be used for many horticultural commodities. It also outlines the effects of MA and CA on the physiology and biochemistry of these commodities as well as on their flavor and quality. Providing the most comprehensive resource on all basic and applied aspects of these technologies, the text also reviews the vast amount of literature already written on this topic. This extensive work captures, for the first time, the entire subject of MA and CA, presenting a complete review of the technological aspects of this important development in food safety and preservation.

Controlled Atmosphere Storage of Fruit and Vegetables, 3rd Edition

Controlled Atmosphere Storage of Fruit and Vegetables, 3rd Edition PDF Author: A Keith Thompson
Publisher: CABI
ISBN: 1786393735
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 445

Book Description
This book contains 14 chapters focusing on the usefulness of controlled atmosphere (CA) storage in the reduction of postharvest losses and maintenance of the nutritive value and organoleptic characteristics of various fruits and vegetables and extend their season of availability by making good eating quality fruits and vegetables available for extended periods at reasonable costs. The efficacy and shortcomings of various CA storage techniques and their potential as alternatives to the application of preservation and pesticide chemicals are also discussed.

Handbook of Research on Advances and Applications in Refrigeration Systems and Technologies

Handbook of Research on Advances and Applications in Refrigeration Systems and Technologies PDF Author: Gaspar, Pedro Dinis
Publisher: IGI Global
ISBN: 1466683996
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 468

Book Description
In recent years, the sustainability and safety of perishable foods has become a major consumer concern, and refrigeration systems play an important role in the processing, distribution, and storage of such foods. To improve the efficiency of food preservation technologies, it is necessary to explore new technological and scientific advances both in materials and processes. The Handbook of Research on Advances and Applications in Refrigeration Systems and Technologies gathers state-of-the-art research related to thermal performance and energy-efficiency. Covering a diverse array of subjects—from the challenges of surface-area frost-formation on evaporators to the carbon footprint of refrigerant chemicals—this publication provides a broad insight into the optimization of cold-supply chains and serves as an essential reference text for undergraduate students, practicing engineers, researchers, educators, and policymakers.

Controlled Atmosphere Storage of Fruits and Vegetables

Controlled Atmosphere Storage of Fruits and Vegetables PDF Author: A. Keith Thompson
Publisher: Oxford University Press, USA
ISBN:
Category : Controlled atmosphere (Industrial process)
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
The transportation and storage of fresh fruit and vegetables is an international operation for which the available technology must be used to ensure that produce reaches the consumer in the best possible condition. The use of controlled atmospheric conditions, as a way of reducing the use of chemical preservatives and pesticides, has great potential for the reduction of postharvest losses and the maintenance of nutritive value and organoleptic characteristics. The proper application of controlled atmosphere storage is likely to have as great an impact as the introduction of refrigeration technology a century earlier, yet its potential is only just becoming appreciated, despite its use for apples for many years. In this book, the author reviews and condenses the large amount of research on controlled atmosphere storage, going back more than 80 years, in order to provide the most comprehensive reference source on this topic. It traces the history of the technique and the range of conditions currently in use for different fruit and vegetables, and their effect on flavor, quality and physiology. The influence of pests and diseases, environmental factors such as mixtures of gases, and packaging are then described and the recommended controlled atmosphere conditions for a wide range of crops is provided. This book is essential reading for horticultural researchers and food industry staff concerned with transportation, storage and quality. In addition, it is a valuable reference source for students of horticulture, agriculture, engineering, food science and technology, and food marketing, as well as regulatory bodies and consumer groups.

Cold and Chilled Storage Technology

Cold and Chilled Storage Technology PDF Author: C.V.J. Dellino
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461311276
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 334

Book Description
The first edition of Cold and Chilled Storage Technology was prepared at a time when great changes were taking place in the industry that were hard to put into clear perspective. For example, the CFClozone layer problem was identified, the Montreal Protocol was signed and experts from many disci plines were already proposing 'solutions' to the problems seen at the time. Not only were there the usual differences in approach to the problems, there were different understandings of the problems themselves. For in stance, some authoritative voices were saying HCFC 22 was 'part of the solution, not part of the problem' and recommending it as the main refrig erant for the future, others said the opposite. As editor, I have taken the view that this should be a 'reference book' and, as such, it should contain information that points in the direction of tried and proven good practice. To avoid the risk of misdirecting readers, I decided that the CFC issue was too unclear to be usefully discussed in the first edition and left it out altogether. This was the main criticism of the first edition at the time of its publication but, in view of the developments since then, I stand by my decision to avoid premature comment in that instance. The matter is discussed in this edition in Chapters 4 and 7, which include summaries of other related factors, in a way that was certainly not possible in 1989.
