Ethics of the Sages

Ethics of the Sages PDF Author:
Publisher: SkyLight Paths Publishing
ISBN: 1594732078
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 194

Book Description
The clear and compelling wisdom of the rabbinic sages can become a companion for your own spiritual journey. At the heart of Judaism is an ethical imperative to live life from your true self, as the image and likeness of God. To do this, you must see the greatness of God manifest in all things, and therefore engage each moment with grace, humility, and justice. This imperative flowers in the words of the early Rabbis (250 BCE-250 CE), who captured God's call to be holy in Pirke Avot, a collection of pithy sayings on how best to live an ethical life. This engaging introduction to the wisdom sayings of the rabbinic sages puts you in direct conversation with them, allowing the sages to speak directly to you about what matters in life and how to live it with dignity. With fresh, contemporary translation and provocative commentary, Rabbi Rami Shapiro focuses on the central themes in this Jewish wisdom compendium--study, kindness, compassion. He clarifies the rabbinic proverbs and parables in order to expose the ethical principles at their root. By recalling the ancient voices of the rabbinic sages, he shows us the contemporary significance of their timeless wisdom and distills Pirke Avot not as a book about ethics but as a practical guide to living ethically today. Now you can experience the wisdom of the early Rabbis even if you have no previous knowledge of Judaism or rabbinic literature. This SkyLight Illuminations edition presents the ethical teachings of the rabbinic sages, with insightful yet unobtrusive commentary that conveys Pirke Avot's core challenge of God to the Jewish people, and through them all humanity: We are to be holy as God is holy. We are to be, in a human way, what God is in a divine way.

Publisher: The Rosen Publishing Group, Inc
ISBN: 1499461348
Category : Juvenile Nonfiction
Languages : en
Pages : 114

Book Description
In the history of ancient philosophy, few figures loom as large as Socrates, whose relentless process of questioning continues to inform philosophical and ethical inquiry today. But during his time, Socrates was a peculiar and sometimes puzzling figure: to some, a barefoot—and even dangerous—gadfly, to others a brilliant and revolutionary teacher. This absorbing volume chronicles what is known of this unorthodox thinker and his incredible legacy. It also provides a window into both the foundations of Western philosophy and the history of golden age Athens, the fate of which was closely tied to that of Socrates himself.

Mishnah and the Words of Jesus

Mishnah and the Words of Jesus PDF Author: Roy B. Blizzard
Publisher: CreateSpace
ISBN: 9781492379058
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 64

Book Description
In this 64 page book Dr. Roy B. Blizzard presents comparisons between the words of Jesus and the words of rabbis prior to, contemporary with, and following Jesus, recorded for us in the Mishnah, Order Nezikin, Tractate Avot, or the Chapters of the Fathers (Pirkei Avot). Probably anyone who has ever focused on the teachings of Jesus in any depth is aware that he was a product of the religious milieu that emerged in the 1st century of this present era. The four gospels preserve for us the largest and the best corpus of material relating to the ideas and methods of teaching of the rabbis of that period. As we compare the words of Jesus with the other rabbis of his day, we can begin to understand where some of the ideas originated, the way they were thinking, and the themes upon which they were teaching. In the teachings of Jesus, there is one underlying and overriding theme, a theme on which Jesus consistently dwells, a theme that serves as the foundation upon which biblical faith is built. That foundational theme is summed up in the Hebrew word tzedakah, the word frequently translated into English as righteousness. Tzedakah is the outstanding, overriding, and yet simple, theme of Jesus. Biblical faith is not so much man always directing his attention upward toward God but, rather, through acts of tzedakah, reaching out to others, meeting them at the point of their need and assisting in making them whole. Principles of biblical faith are not directed upward. It is not something one does for God. It is directed outward toward one's fellow man, but in so doing, at one and the same time, one performs the will of the Father. Throughout Mishnah and the Words of Jesus, Dr. Blizzard points out how the Sages echo one another and how it all harmonizes completely with the words of Jesus. (Length: 15,500 words).
