Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: February 12, 1925 I have chosen this particular passage from many others which bear upon the same subject and have submitted these comments to emphasise one of the greatest impelling powers behind the great missionary movement of the Church of Christ, viz. To announce to all the world that Jesus Christ has again delegated the same authority to men, which He gave to His former apostles, and has once more established His Church upon earth. As the Saviour authoritatively commissioned His apostles of old, so has He authoritatively commissioned men to-(lay. Missionaries are abroad declaring this wonderful message. Equal to this as an impelling force is the Church membership's realisation of the transforming power of the Gospel. Every true member knows that obedience to the Gospel brings to individuals new motives, new ideals, new assurance that it will produce ideal conditions in society and bring to each nation that new life and love of service which will eventually establish the long-hoped-for peace and good w ill. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: November 12, 1925 Editor's note: A series of articles on our Latter-day Saint Hymns, of which this is the first, will appear from month to month in this magazine. They are presented especially for use in the Mutual Improvement Associations but will undoubtedly be interesting and instructive to all who will read and study them. The hymns written by Latter-day Saint authors are full of the fervour that characterises the people as a religious group. Many of them are the offspring of historical events of great importance; preserving the emotional past and breathing the marvelous hope of the future of the Latter-day Saints. Whatever the limita tions of the hymns of the Latter-day Saints may be, we face the gratifying fact that they are greater in number and better in quality than one could ordinarily hope for, when we take into consideration the youth of the Church and the strenuous life that has been led by its adherents. Yet from the very hardships that have been endured by this people have come some of their most inspirational hymns. It will be the purpose of this course of lessons to present the values of such hymns as may be selected in such a way that we may come to know something of. Their historical significance, as well as to be led to appreciate more thoroughly their thought content, their emotional content, and their literary effectiveness. Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: December 31, 1925 But why do the modernists reject the divinity of Jesus Christ? May we not answer: It is because they do not, and apparently can not understand what is called the immaculate conception? They do not believe in Christ's miracles nor in His resurrection from the dead, for the same reason. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: January 1, 1925 However, the present fact with us is that by common custom we enter upon a New Year. Goodbye 1924 Welcome 1925! We shall be the wiser and better if we make the history of the Old Year a guide to the New. TO this end we shall do well to remember the past. Only through cumulative experiences can we grow and develop in wisdom. Events Of deep significance and immeasurable importance are following one another with bewildering rapidity. We say time is flying swiftly in this age; though everybody knows that the units are just as long as they ever have been. But with many great occurrences crowded into a year, we are thoughtlessly prone to think that the time is too Short for them all. Nevertheless, it is a fact that history is being made more rapidly than in times bygone; that is to say, more Of the really great occurrences, such as shall have enduring place in recorded annals, come to pass within a given period now than aforetime. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: June 25, 1925 These this prominent writer gives as the fundamentals of Christianity. These the Elders of the Church of Jesus Christ are preaching. Their aims are lofty, their purposes are sublime, and the world, instead of speaking against them should encourage them and uphold them. Particularly is this true of the State of Utah. Every citizen of this State owes an obligation to the two thousand missionaries who are out representing this State in honour. Why should anyone condemn the missionaries who are out preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ without price, paying their own expenses for teaching to the world the Fatherhood of God, the brotherhood of man, and bearing witness, in kindness and love, that our Father has appeared to man, that His Son Jesus Christ has been raised from the tomb and now lives, bearing wit ness to the world of the immortality of the soul? Who Should vilify people for standing on that sublime ground They testify further that the Church of Christ is organised in its perfection, and if the world will accept that Church and apply its principles economically, educationally and socially, the brotherhood of man will be established and the Millennium for which all honest souls are longing will be hastened. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: April 30, 1925 I think you all know what the camera is, the kodak. To-day it is in very common use. You know it consists essentially Of a lens and a light-tight box, so arranged that a sensitive plate can be put into position just at the proper distance behind the lens. To me the miracle of the photographic plate becomes greater and greater with the years. Think of it-that plate has been in the dark ever Since it was made. It is put into position in the camera, the shutter of the lens is Opened perhaps for the one-hundredth of a second, and the light passes through the lens and falls upon the plate. For one-hundredth of a second that plate looks out upon the world, and oh, how well it remembers what it saw! Perhaps it is a landscape that it gazes upon, or the face of a loved one sitting in a chair; and it forgets nothing. After exposure the plate is taken into the dark room, removed from the light tight case, and developed by means of chemical liquids. When it is dry we hold it up to the light and see the picture; and from the negative we can print as many positive copies as we like. Now, how is that miracle brought about? By strict Obedience to the laws of light, and to all the mechanical laws and rules involved in the operation Of the camera, and to all the chemical laws involved in the development of the plate; and only through such Obedience can we be successful. If we break even the least of these laws we fail to get the picture; and in place of a good negative we have only a spoiled plate. SO we may consider other illustrations, and we see that through Obedience are we able to gain blessings. Men of science in this country to-day are at work in your laboratories striving to discover other laws of Nature not yet known; and why do they wish to make such discoveries? So that we may know how to obey these laws; because they know that by obedience to these higher laws we will get greater and higher blessings. Book Description
Excerpt from The Latter-Day Saints' Millennial Star, Vol. 87: November 26, 1925 I sometimes onder if the keys Of authority which belong to the Office and calling of one who occupies this exalted position in the Church is fully understood by the people. A careful study of the etymology of the word and of the lives, works and character of the prophets of old, makes clear the fact that a prophet was and is one called to act as God's messenger. He is to teach men the character of God, and define and make known to the people His will. He is to denounce sin, and declare the punishment of transgression. He is to be above all else a preacher of righteousness, and when the people depart-from the path which he has marked out for them to follow, is to call them back to the true faith. He is as an interpreter Of the Scripture, and declares its meaning and application. When future events are to be declared he predicts them, but his direct and most impor tant calling is to be a forth-teller, or director of present policy, rather than a foreteller of that which is to come.
