Excerpt from A Manual of Phonology: Memoir 11 This manual was begun during the Spring Semester of 1952 - 3, while I was on Sabbatical Leave from Cornell University, and also the recipient of a grant from The Rockefeller Foundation, administered through the University. I wish to express my gratitude to both of those institutions, whose assistance made it possible for me to spend my time in research and writing rather than in directly remunerative activities. When first planned, what appears here was to be but the initial section of a treatise designed to cover all phases of linguistics. The size of the present volume will convince the reader, I am sure, that my original notion was hardly feasible. I hope that in due time other portions of the treatise as originally conceived may appear, but the expression of this hope must not be construed as a guarantee. My debt to my colleagues, both at Cornell and elsewhere, is of course enor mous. The bibliographical references will indicate some small portion of this debt. It would be impossible to single out, for mention here, all the individuals who have been of more direct assistance; were I to attempt such a thing, I would be bound to commit unforgivable errors of omission. We need not repeat that the sound of e in each of these words should be repre sented by the same letter; or that by substituting for the complex letter 6 a simple character that can be _made with one motion of the pen, seven-eights or nine-tenths of the la bor in writing would be saved. These are facts that are evi dent, after the illustrations are presented. 'and we might thus illustrate the unscientific mode of representing nearly every word in our language, with equally formidable results. In Phonetic Shorthand words are spelled as they are pronounced, and no silent letters are used. In the English alphabet the sounds of Oh as in chain, Th in thin, Sh in show, and N g in sing, are not provided with distinct letters, though they are really simple sounds. The same letter often indicates different sounds, in different words, as the letter G, in the words gun, gem the use of two or more letters to indicate a sound for which a single character is pro vided, is also very frequent, as the sound of F in the word trough, triumph; and a single, simple sound is Often indicated by let ters to which entirely different values are'usuall y assigned, as in the words pleasure, azure, the letters S and Z are used to indicate a sound which has no precise representative in the language.
