The Mind's Provisions

The Mind's Provisions PDF Author: Vincent Descombes
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691146667
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 309

Book Description
Vincent Descombes brings together an astonishingly large body of philosophical and anthropological thought to present a thoroughgoing critique of contemporary cognitivism and to develop a powerful new philosophy of the mind. Beginning with a critical examination of American cognitivism and French structuralism, Descombes launches a more general critique of all philosophies that view the mind in strictly causal terms and suppose that the brain--and not the person--thinks. Providing a broad historical perspective, Descombes draws surprising links between cognitivism and earlier anthropological projects, such as Lévi-Strauss's work on the symbolic status of myths. He identifies as incoherent both the belief that mental states are detached from the world and the idea that states of mind are brain states; these assumptions beg the question of the relation between mind and brain. In place of cognitivism, Descombes offers an anthropologically based theory of mind that emphasizes the mind's collective nature. Drawing on Wittgenstein, he maintains that mental acts are properly attributed to the person, not the brain, and that states of mind, far from being detached from the world, require a historical and cultural context for their very intelligibility. Available in English for the first time, this is the most outstanding work of one of France's finest contemporary philosophers. It provides a much-needed link between the continental and Anglo-American traditions, and its impact will extend beyond philosophy to anthropology, psychology, critical theory, and French studies.

Minding the Mind

Minding the Mind PDF Author: Mridula Seth
Publisher: Notion Press
ISBN: 1649517041
Category : Psychology
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
Minding the Mind by Mridula Seth is a first-hand experience guide that delves into the excitement and challenges of volunteering in mental health advocacy. It describes the silent sufferings of persons with mental illness (PMIs) and how they cope with self-stigma and negative social attitudes. It delineates problems faced by caregivers and their search for the rehabilitation facilities as a solution. There is need for such facilities, early diagnosis, and treatment of mental illnesses. Why are people reluctant to talk about their mental health problems? What are the challenges faced by NGOs running rehab facilities? Why is it difficult to get funds from the corporate sector for mental health? Minding the Mind is a journey and a search for answers, for more questions to be raised, by Mridula Seth, an advocate for social causes, and a volunteer with an NGO running a halfway home for PMIs. The aim of this book is to bring more volunteers, especially the youth and caregivers, to serve as advocates to break the silence, and create an environment for advocacy on mental health.

The Culpable Corporate Mind

The Culpable Corporate Mind PDF Author: Elise Bant
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing
ISBN: 150995239X
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 523

Book Description
This collection examines critically, and with an eye to reform, conceptions and conditions of corporate blameworthiness in law. It draws on legal, moral, regulatory and psychological theory, as well as historical and comparative perspectives. These insights are applied across the spheres of civil, criminal, and international law. The collection also has a deliberate focus on the 'nuts and bolts' of the law: the legal, equitable and statutory principles and rules that operate to establish corporate states of mind, on which responsibility as a matter of daily legal practice commonly depends. The collection therefore engages strongly with scholarly debates. The book also speaks, clearly and cogently, to the judges, regulators, legislators, law reform commissioners, barristers and practitioners who administer and, through their respective roles, incrementally influence the development of the law at the coalface of legal practice.
