An Introduction to the Properties of Fluids and Solids

An Introduction to the Properties of Fluids and Solids PDF Author: Robert A. Heidemann
Publisher: Calgary : University of Calgary Press
ISBN: 9780919813069
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book deals with some basic thermodynamic and transport properties of fluids and solids that are of interest in engineering applications. Various notions about the basic structure of matter, fundamental concepts of our physical world and the conditions of equilibrium between different phases of matter are discussed in the first part of the book. The macroscopic properties of fluids and solids are explained in the latter part. The book is written for first-year university students in engineering. Therefore, simple derivations and clear explanations have been preferred to detailed theoretical treatment. Illustrative problems, spaced throughout the text, demonstrate the application of various concepts and facilitate a better understanding of the theory. The text provides a sound first treatment of many properties of fluids and solids of interest in all the engineering disciplines.

Amorphous Solids

Amorphous Solids PDF Author: William A. Phillips
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642815340
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 179

Book Description
It is now ten years since it was first convincingly shown that below 1 K the ther mal conductivity and the heat capacity of amorphous solids behave in a way which is strikingly different to that of crystalline solids. Since that time there has been a wide variety of experimental and theoretical studies which have not only defined and clarified the low temperature problem more closely, but have also linked these differences between amorphous and crystalline solids to those suggested by older acoustic and thermal experiments (extending up to 100 K). The interest in this somewhat restricted branch of physics lies to a considerable extent in the fact that the differences were so unexpected. It might be thought that as the tempera ture, probing frequency, or more generally the energy decreases, a continuum de scription in which structural differences between glass and crystal are concealed should become more accurate. In a sense this is true, but it appears that there exists in an amorphous solid a large density of additional excitations which have no counterpart in normal crystals. This book presents a survey of the wide range of experimental investigations of these low energy excitations, together with a re view of the various theoretical models put forward to explain their existence and nature.

Atomistic Properties of Solids

Atomistic Properties of Solids PDF Author: Dinker B. Sirdeshmukh
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642199712
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 618

Book Description
The book deals with atomistic properties of solids which are determined by the crystal structure, interatomic forces and atomic displacements influenced by the effects of temperature, stress and electric fields. The book gives equal importance to experimental details and theory. There are full chapters dedicated to the tensor nature of physical properties, mechanical properties, lattice vibrations, crystal structure determination and ferroelectricity. The other crystalline states like nano-, poly-, liquid- and quasi crystals are discussed. Several new topics like nonlinear optics and the Rietveld method are presented in the book. The book lays emphasis on the role of symmetry in crystal properties. Comprehensiveness is the strength of the book; this allows users at different levels a choice of chapters according to their requirements.
