Book Description
Excerpt from The Oracle of Reason, or Philosophy Vindicated, Vol. 1 The present age needed a few examples of sterling integrity and unflinching courage. Southwell and holyoake have furnished two, that will not soon be forgotten, and must fire every manly heart with a spirit of noble emulation. Southwell, single-handed, attacked the monster, superstition, in its very den. He challenged the big beast to mortal combat, and, though a prisoner, not a bone of his body is broken, not a drop Of his blood chilled, and now, as at first, his resolution is to destroy or be destroyed. Imprisonment will but give him ample leisure to grind his weapons, and train his body for another and more decisive encounter. Oracles of the Cosmos

Oracles of the Cosmos PDF Author: Paul Richard Blum
Publisher: Schwabe Verlag (Basel)
ISBN: 3796545475
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 106

Book Description
The divide between science and religion has its roots in the early modern period. In the first part, the popular talk of oracles of reason is traced back to the ancient oracles published in the 15th century, and it is shown how this led to the emergence of a "natural" theology that does without revelation, so that eventually reference to a divine creator seems superfluous. In the second part, using the concept of the cosmos, it is shown that mathematics, especially geometry, has been part of the theological interpretation of Creation since the Middle Ages. From this developed the concept of transcendence as rooted in human thought. Therefore, cosmos, creation, and humanity, which are mutually exclusive, form a unity of complementary elements.

Teeth and Talons Whetted for Slaughter

Teeth and Talons Whetted for Slaughter PDF Author: Piet Slootweg

Book Description
Is a life cycle that depends on eating or being eaten compatible with a creation in which 'the heavens are telling the glory of God; and the firmament proclaims His handiwork'? Are animal death and extinction manifestations of a good God's majesty and power? When creating the world, did God use animal death and extinction as a means to realize his intentions? This study challenges the view that the emergence and acceptance of the theory of evolution brought a break in thinking about animal suffering in a good creation. Even before Darwin, people thought about animal suffering, about how God's goodness and good creation related to this, and about whether animals were already subject to death in paradise. Historically, Charles Darwin's theory of evolution did not form a watershed in the debate about animal suffering, nor did concerns about animal suffering only emerge with the Darwinian theory of evolution.

Newman in the Story of Philosophy

Newman in the Story of Philosophy PDF Author: D. J. Pratt Morris-Chapman
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725283166
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 282

Book Description
Saint John Henry Newman is widely acknowledged to be an important theologian. Despite this, Newman commentators believe that his work has received little recognition by philosophers. This book explores whether or not Newman’s supposed philosophical isolation constitutes a misconception in Newman historiography. First of all, it does this by examining Newman’s general philosophical reception over the last two centuries; surveying a wide range of philosophical positions and philosophers from the many different branches of this discipline. The book then focuses upon whether or not Newman has made a contribution to one specific philosophical position, seldom given attention within Newman scholarship: the particularist approach to epistemology. In its investigations into this and the other more general dimension of Newman’s philosophical reception, the book offers an historical re-evaluation of Newman’s philosophical legacy.

A History of Atheism in Britain

A History of Atheism in Britain PDF Author: David Berman
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135975647
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 264

Book Description
Probably no doctrine has excited as much horror and abuse as atheism. This first history of British atheism, first published in 1987, tries to explain this reaction while exhibiting the development of atheism from Hobbes to Russell. Although avowed atheism appeared surprisingly late – 1782 in Britain – there were covert atheists in the middle seventeenth century. By tracing its development from so early a date, Dr Berman gives an account of an important and fascinating strand of intellectual history.

Contemporary Thought on Nineteenth Century Socialism

Contemporary Thought on Nineteenth Century Socialism PDF Author: Ophélie Siméon
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 0429839510
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 504

Book Description
This first volume will showcase the richness and diversity of the Owenite movement, which spanned decades (from Owen’s first published books in 1813-16 to the late 1840s), political allegiances, genders and continents. This volume therefore calls for a variety of sources not easily available elsewhere - including books, pamphlets, correspondence and newspaper articles - and a variety of often overlapping voices - from Chartists to early co-operators, secularists, non-British Owenites and proponents of women’s rights. The sheer range of Owenite ventures (intentional communities, co-operatives, labour exchanges and experiments in popular education) will be covered, thus blending social and political history. The attempt to map the Owenite movement will eventually lead to the identification of its shared, core principles and values: internationalism, co-operation, concepts of political change, and above all, the ideal of community.
