The Private Prayer Book
Author: Francis H. Stubbs

ISBN: 9781331251293
Category : Music
Languages : en
Pages : 220
Book Description
Excerpt from The Private Prayer Book: A Manual of Instruction and Prayer for the People of the Church This little book is mainly a new arrangement and adaptation of doctrinal statements, explanations and directions, and prayers contained in quite a large number of devotional books in use in England and America, such as "Heygate's Manual," "Carter's Private Prayers," "The Plain Guide," "The Priest's Prayer Book," "The Treasury of Devotion," etc. The object has been to combine in one book, convenient for popular use, both a manual for the Holy Communion, and a guide of Repentance and a true Christian life. The Compiler was led to attempt this work by the need which he felt would be met by it in his own parish. He thinks many of the Reverend Clergy, with himself, desire a manual of devotion which they may offer to their flocks, which shall be at once comprehensive of all the essential teaching of the Catholic Church, and yet not too large and expensive, too profuse and elaborate. The difficulty of making such a book none can know except by actual experience, for the very wealth of devotional material in the Church increases the perplexity and labor of selection. Though conscious of the defects of the Manual he has prepared, he trusts that it may at least lead on to something better, and he humbly prays Almighty God to accept and bless it and make it instrumental to the good of souls. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work. Praying with the Church
Author: Scot McKnight
Publisher: Paraclete Press
ISBN: 1612615120
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 153
Book Description
Scot McKnight, best-selling author of The Jesus Creed, invites readers to get closer to the heart of Jesus' message by discovering the ancient rhythms of daily prayer at the heart of the early church. "This is the old path of praying as Jesus prayed," McKnight explains, "and in that path, we learn to pray along with the entire Church and not just by ourselves as individuals." Praying with the Church is written for all Christians who desire to know more about the ancient devotional traditions of the Christian faith, and to become involved in their renaissance today. With his trademark style of getting right to the heart of theological concepts through practical, witty, and memorable examples from everyday life, Scot invites readers to explore: How Jesus prayed, How the Psalms teach us to pray, How Orthodox Christians pray, How Roman Catholics pray, How Anglicans pray, How The Divine Hours of Phyllis Tickle teaches us to pray, And, how praying with the church is an essential part of spiritual formation.
