Book Description
Excerpt from The Relationship Between the Library and the Public Schools: Reprints of Papers and Addresses In response to what seems to be a general demand, this first volume of the series has been devoted to the relations between the library and the school. Upon the reception accorded to it will depend the further continuance of the enterprise. I desire to acknowledge the kind advice and assist ance of library - school authorities, and in particular the aid of Miss Effie L. Power, Supervisor of Children's work in the St. Louis Public Library, which has been of great value in the selection and grouping of the material. Book Description
Excerpt from Public Libraries and Popular Education The American library association, like the National educational association, is loyal to the highest ideas of public service in city, state and nation. Every state library association, every state uni versity and efficient library school is a living illustration of that growing consciousness of American unity which those early colonial federations and conventions in church and state anticipated in politics, religion and education. Book Description
Excerpt from Library Books for High Schools This list is based on the Minnesota school library list, Books for High Schools, 1913 - 14. The number of titles has been materially increased to include the suggestions of many high-school teachers, specialists in the Bureau of Education, high-school librarians, public librarians, and commission workers. The suggestions and demands of teachers of special departments for comprehensive lists on particular subjects have been somewhat insistent, and the result is that some divisions, notably agriculture, are out Of proportion to the rest Of the list. Book Description
Excerpt from Graded and Annotated Catalog of Books in the Public Library of the District of Columbia, for Use in the Schools of the City The Public Library of the District of Columbia furnishes to the Public Schools of the city, through the school stations and through the cooperation of the grade teachers, 'many thousands of books during the school year. It is more and more forced on the attention of the library that numerically only a small portion of the children of Washington are being satisfactorily reached by the main library and its one branch. It is to the schools, reaching every locality, to which the library looks for help in solving the problem. A book in the hands of a teacher and recommended by her carries great weight. There fore by sending small libraries to all of the schools, more par ticularly the distant ones, we hope to reach the right child with the right book at the right time. Any teacher may select or request the library to select one book for each child in her class or any number of books up to fifty, which will be sent to her by the library and called for at the end of two months, after notification, unless she desires to retain them for a longer period. For the convenience of the teachers and to advise them of the material to be had for supplementary work and for pleasurable reading this graded and annotated catalog of books has been prepared. It has been arranged by subject that the material on the work being studied may be readily found. There is also an author index. Many of the books listed in a certain grade will be found useful in a lower or higher grade, the grading being only suggestive. The Public Library and the Common Schools

Book Description
Excerpt from The Public Library and the Common Schools: Three Papers on Educational Topics You are all teachers in the common schools of the town of Quincy, and I very freely acknowledge that I think your course as such, especially of late, has been marked by a good deal of zeal, by a consciousness of progress, and a sincere desire to accomplish good results. I am disposed neither to find fault with you nor with our schools, as schools go. I should like, however, to ask you this simple question Did it ever, after all, occur to you, what is the great end and object of all this common school system - Why do we get all these children together, and labor over them so assiduously year after year? Now, it may well be that it never sug gested itself in that way to you, but I think it may safely be asserted that the one best possible result of a common-school edu cation, its great end and aim, should be to prepare the children of the community for the far greater work of educating themselves. The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York (Classic Reprint)

The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: A. Emerson Palmer
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9781527973053

Pages : 508

Book Description
Excerpt from The New York Public School, Being a History of Free Education, in the City of New York The celebration of the centenary of the inauguration (on February 19, 1805) of the movement for free public schools in this city was suggested to the Board of Education in the spring of 1904, and, later, the preparation of a history of public education in New York. The Board unanimously approved both suggestions, and granted me a leave of absence for the purpose of writing this book. Although the time has been, of necessity, limited, no reasonable pains have been spared to secure accuracy. From the literary point of view this work makes no claim upon the reader. It is put forth as a fairly complete chronicle - a chronicle rather than a philosophic his tory of educational events in the city during the past one hundred years. To fill out the record, a preliminary chapter, relating to schools on Manhattan Island prior to 1805, precedes the his tory of the century now closing; and accounts of early schools in other parts of the city are also given.
