Book Description
Brimming with positive spirit and alive with the possibilities modernism, these lectures, written and delivered amid the unrest of World War I, explore from a new perspective the relentless drive of human history. Emphasizing the human aspect of everything civilization has achieved-and the human aspects that have held it back-American theologian and divinity school dean SHAILER MATHEWS (1863-1941) discusses how everything from individual personalities to moral, religious, and artistic ideals can also serve as engines of change apart from the more typically considered economic and military ones. First published in 1916 (this is a replica of the 1919 third edition), this inspiring and insightful book will intrigue history buffs and philosophers of the human condition.

Book Description
Excerpt from The Spiritual Interpretation of History Lectureship was constituted a perpetual foundation in Harvard University in 1898, as a memorial to the late William Belden Noble of Washington, D.C. (Harvard, 1885). The deed of gift provides that the lectures shall be not less than six in number, that they shall be delivered annually, and, if convenient, in the Phillips Brooks House, during the season of Advent. Each lecturer shall have ample notice of his appointment, and the publication of each course of lectures is required. The purpose of the Lectureship will be further seen in the following citation from the deed of gift by which it was established: - "The object of the founder of the Lectures is to continue the mission of William Belden Noble, whose supreme desire it was to extend the influence of Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life; to make known the meaning of the words of Jesus. 'I am come that they might have life, and that they might have it more abundantly.' In accordance with the large interpretation of the Influence of Jesus by the late Phillips Brooks, with whose religious teaching he in whose memory the Lectures are established and also the founder of the Lectures were in deep sympathy, it is intended that the scope of the Lectures shall be as wide as the highest interests of humanity. Telling the Truth

Telling the Truth PDF Author: Dr. Marvin Olasky
Publisher: Wipf and Stock Publishers
ISBN: 1725228815
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 304

Book Description
"Think of what revitalizing journalism would do for the cause of Christ in America! It is the most needed sort of pre-evangelism; it is training in Christian worldview; it is an aid to sanctification, and you need to teach people how to do it." --J. I. Packer to Marvin Olasky Telling the Truth is Dr. Olasky's valuable response to this charge from the noted theologian. In it he emphasizes both the philosophical and the practical: detailing the need for Christian journalists to have a well developed worldview, and giving essential instruction to help them hone their writing, editing, and interviewing skills. The shortcomings of modern journalism are many. Too often evangelical publications, instead of exhibiting the journalistic excitement of the hunt, are content printing public-relations releases and carrying on their business in a joyless manner. But it doesn't have to be this way. Indeed, as Christians, it must not be this way! We are called to excellence; to do our work in such a way that it glorifies the Creator Himself. This incisive book not only urges journalists to grasp the significance of their purpose but also shows them how to more effectively accomplish it. As Olasky says, "If even fifty new, talented, biblically directed journalists were to emerge in America during the next few years, the revitalization of Christian journalism would be well under way."
