Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Carotenoids

Dietary Reference Intakes for Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Selenium, and Carotenoids PDF Author: Institute of Medicine
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309069491
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 530

Book Description
This volume is the newest release in the authoritative series of quantitative estimates of nutrient intakes to be used for planning and assessing diets for healthy people. Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) is the newest framework for an expanded approach developed by U.S. and Canadian scientists. This book discusses in detail the role of vitamin C, vitamin E, selenium, and the carotenoids in human physiology and health. For each nutrient the committee presents what is known about how it functions in the human body, which factors may affect how it works, and how the nutrient may be related to chronic disease. Dietary Reference Intakes provides reference intakes, such as Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDAs), for use in planning nutritionally adequate diets for different groups based on age and gender, along with a new reference intake, the Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL), designed to assist an individual in knowing how much is "too much" of a nutrient.

Book Description
What others are saying about Summer Storm. "In Summer Storm, Paul Frazee has set himself the daunting task of giving us a panoramic view of the events leading up to WWII Its thrilling action, its surprise twists and turns of the plot are meticulously researched. Through the motivations of its main characters, we encounter compassionate depictions of various aspects of love, and their corollary, hatred and violence, made plausible by the urgency of stemming the Nazis. In the course of these sweeping events ... we encounter many prominent personalities of the thirties and forties. More than that, the story is skillfully brought down to the level of individuals who lived and suffered through those defining moments of the 20th Century. Its spine-tingling tales of intrigue, of espionage and counter-espionage make this a must read." Gerda Weissmann Klein, subject of 1995 ACADEMY AWARDr Winner, Best Documentary, Short, One Survivor Remembers. "From one who served in the Solomon's Campaign during WWII, I can say this is the way it was. Summer Storm is a great read one that will keep the midnight oil burning." LCDR-USNR (Retired) Ted Robinson, Commanding Officer, PT-118, Squadron Six, Solomon's Campaign during WW II. Paul Frazee has woven history, facts and fiction into a gripping story of intrigue and conspiracy during the pre-World War II years in Europe. Having fought in many of the places he describes, I marvel at his ability to describe them so accurately. Like "Waiting for a Rainbow- Coming of Age in Vietnam" Frazee has done his research, making Summer Storm an absorbing tale, and wide open for a continuing saga of the War in future books. The body has a remarkable ability to ward off disease and heal itself--and it does it with the help of the most important antioxidant you've never heard of: glutathione (GSH), the "master antioxidant." This indispensable molecule--which we make ourselves--holds the key to immunity, vitality, and lifelong health, helping to flush out toxins, fight DNA-damaging free radicals, and rebuild other essential antioxidants like Vitamins C and E. It's been linked to longevity in centenarians, and it protects against diseases like cancer, diabetes, and Alzheimer's. It plays a role in lesser ailments too: low glutathione levels could be the culprit behind your fatigue, aches, and pains. At the forefront of the latest GSH research, Dr. Nayan Patel shares all the information you need to boost your glutathione levels, revitalize your body, and transform your life with this naturally-occurring super antioxidant. In The Glutathione Revolution, he addresses the most important questions about GSH: What exactly is glutathione? What happens when your GSH levels are low? What diseases does GSH ward off? Nutrition and HIV

Nutrition and HIV PDF Author: Saurabh Mehta
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351058185
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 326

Book Description
The world continues to lose more than a million lives each year to the HIV epidemic, and nearly two million individuals were infected with HIV in 2017 alone. The new Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by countries of the United Nations in September 2015, include a commitment to end the AIDS epidemic by 2030. Considerable emphasis on prevention of new infections and treatment of those living with HIV will be needed to make this goal achievable. With nearly 37 million people now living with HIV, it is a communicable disease that behaves like a noncommunicable disease. Nutritional management is integral to comprehensive HIV care and treatment. Improved nutritional status and weight gain can increase recovery and strength of individuals living with HIV/AIDS, improve dietary diversity and caloric intake, and improve quality of life. This book highlights evidence-based research linking nutrition and HIV and identifies research gaps to inform the development of guidelines and policies for the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals. A comprehensive approach that includes nutritional interventions is likely to maximize the benefit of antiretroviral therapy in preventing HIV disease progression and other adverse outcomes in HIV-infected men and women. Modification of nutritional status has been shown to enhance the quality of life of those suffering HIV/AIDS, both physically in terms of improved body mass index and immunological markers, and psychologically, by improving symptoms of depression. While the primary focus for those infected should remain on antiretroviral treatment and increasing its availability and coverage, improvement of nutritional status plays a complementary role in the management of HIV infection.
