After Garrick there were several adapters who in their time held no mean place in the estimation of their contemporaries - though even their memory is now largely darkened by the shadow of neglect that has fallen across eighteenth century drama. Arthur Murphy, for instance, was said to have an extent of dramatic talents very rarely concentrated in one writer,2 and Aaron Hill secured a wide hearing from those who lived in the same years with him - his projects, his dramatic theories and practices, his pretensions to poetic authority and power, found many ears.
