Book Description
Excerpt from A Bibliography of Articles on the History of American Medicine Compiled From "Writings on American History" 1902-1937 Dr. Judson Bennett Gilbert died on May 31, 1950, at the age of 51, of malignant hypertension, with many works accomplished but with many more projects in a partially completed state. Fortunately for us the bibliography herein published is one of his completed tasks. Dr. Gilbert was born in Schenectady, New York, attended the local schools, Union College, and was graduated from Syracuse Uni versity College of Medicine in 1926. He interned at the Albany Hos pital and became a resident at the Memorial Hospital in New York City. He specialized in urology, was elected a Diplomate of the American Board of Urology, and was intensely interested in cancer, especially of the urinary tract. His writings on testis tumors were extensive and are frequently referred to by subsequent writers on that subject. Early in his professional career Dr. Gilbert acquired an interest in medical history. His first paper, written in collaboration with Dr. E. R. Wiese, and published in the Annals of Medical History in 1931, was a study of Theodor Kocher. Later he translated a paper by a.a.s. Verneuil written in 1859, describing the problems to be overcome in searching for the original references to surgery of amputations. In 1942, Dr. Gilbert published a Facsimile Copy of the Questionnaire from the First Cancer Society, of printed in the Edinburgh Medical and Surgical Journal in 1806. From Hippocrates to COVID-19

From Hippocrates to COVID-19 PDF Author: Dale A. Stirling
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000574830
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 589

Book Description
The COVID-19 pandemic provides stark evidence of the importance of medicine on a global scale. However, revisiting the influenza pandemic of 1918 provided a perspective as we searched for a viable vaccine and instituted public health measures. This shows that medical knowledge is an accumulative process extending to the past and it is in the spirit of that legacy that this bibliography has been compiled. The book is a one-stop resource that cites literature related to the historical aspects of medicine. It also acknowledges medicine’s global reach and devotes significant effort in that respect. Although the online world seems to dominate on both a social and educational level, there is still a need for thoughtfully curated and focused reference works and this bibliography accomplishes that goal. The book has 9,000+ citations. It utilizes the WHO's International classification of Diseases for the section on diseases and disorders and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's Product Code Classification Database for the section on medical devices, equipment, and instruments. It includes detailed subject, geographuc, and people indexes for an easy reference.

The Natural Sciences and American Scientists in the Revolutionary Era

The Natural Sciences and American Scientists in the Revolutionary Era PDF Author: Katalin Harkanyi
Publisher: Greenwood
ISBN:
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 544

Book Description
The years 1760 to 1789 mark the political birth of the United States; simultaneously, an emancipation of American scientific endeavor from the influence of England and Europe was taking place. This is especially evident in the area of natural sciences--the growing frontiers and population of America opened up vast areas to scientific scrutiny. This extensive bibliography commemorates the scholarship that was published in many forms by and about Revolutionary American science from 1760 through the twentieth century. Part one of Katalin Harkanyi's work provides an overview of the natural sciences in the Revolutionary Era. Comprehensive and general sources are listed in the fields of natural history (botany, zoology, agriculture, and geology), natural philosophy (mathematics, chemistry, astronomy, surveying, engineering, and architecture), and medicine (dentistry, pharmacology, and veterinary medicine). Included are journals, documents, biographies, bibliographies, histories, orations, and even travel journals and diaries which create a framework for the study of Revolutionary American science. The second part of this bibliography is devoted to the scientists themselves: the men and women who wrote partial or specific scientific studies. This section of the book shows that these early Americans were capable of remarkable investigations into the natural world, rivaling their European contemporaries. Here are listed the scientists, their extant monographic works, and studies written about them from their age into the twentieth century. Appendices include scientific firsts and special achievements of Revolutionary Americans and a list of scientists arranged by discipline. This book will be a useful guide for historians and scientists, as well as inquiring general readers, who want to know more about the early growth of American science.
