The field of migration studies has mushroomed all over the world and has now gained a certain academic autonomy. However, as the editors to this volume, Maria Kousis, Aspasia Chatzidaki and Konstantinos Kafetsios insist that the study of migration cannot be separated from the wider social, economic and political contexts in which mobility takes place. For Greece, as for Europe at large, that context can be summarised by the now ubiquitous word 'crisis' or, to be more exact, three crises - the first arising from the ramifying effects of the 2008 financial crisis, the second from the movement of migrants and refugees to Europe during 2015/2016, and the third from the Covid-19 crisis, commencing in 2020. Greece was at the vortex of the first two crises, though, thankfully, she has so far been relatively less affected by the Covid crisis. So dispiriting was the period from 2008 onwards that, on the surface, it was difficult to discern periods of normalcy between the crises. Sotiris Laganopoulos, the Secretary of the Bodossaki Foundation, a Greek philanthropic organisation active in supporting refugees and migrants, even suggested that the foundation had to administer its programmes during a period of 'perma-crisis'.1 The great virtue of this pathbreaking and carefully curated collection of 15 studies on mobilities in Greece during the three crises is that the authors probe the complex reactions and interactions happening below the surface. In their introduction, the editors commend the multi-disciplinary nature of the contributions. Of course they are right, but even more impressive is that it is often difficult, without looking at the authors' affiliations, to tell what the contributors' home disciplines are. As a perceptive scholar, George Homans remarked long ago that this happens when 'the problem is in control'.2 In short, when facing a complex issue and a fast-moving reality, a scholar has to grab whatever insights and information are available, unfiltered by prior loyalties and affiliations. This edited book examines the experience of small states in Europe during the 2015–2016 migration crisis. The contributions highlight the challenges small states and the European Union faced in addressing the massive irregular flow of migrants and refugees into Europe and the Schengen Area. Small states adopted a number of coping strategies and proved relatively effective in navigating the storm they faced. Externally they pursued strategies of shelter-seeking, hiding, hedging and norm entrepreneurship, while domestically they tended to securitize migration and to pursue scapegoating by blaming the EU and other states for the nature and magnitude of the crisis. During this crisis management, their small administrations proved resilient and flexible in their responses, despite suffering from limited resources and being subject to the shifting preferences of stronger actors. This book shows that independent of whether we view the migration crisis as a crisis for the European Union or Europe as a whole, or how we interpret the intensity and severity of the crisis, this was a crisis for small states in Europe. The crisis disrupted the liberal and institutionalized order upon which small states in the region had increasingly based their policies and influence for more than 60 years.

First, it identifies the scale and nature of this new Southern European emigration and examines these migrants’ socio-economic integration in Northern European destination countries. This is achieved through an analysis of the most recent data on flows and profiles of this new labour force using sending-country and receiving-country databases. Second, it looks at the politics and policies of immigration, both from the perspective of the sending- and receiving-countries. Analysing the policies and debates about these new flows in the home and host countries’ this book shows how contentious the issue of intra-EU mobility has recently become in the context of the crisis when the right for EU citizens to move within the EU had previously not been questioned for decades. Overall, the strength of this edited volume is that it compiles in a systematic way quantitative and qualitative analysis of these renewed Southern European migration flows and draws the lessons from this changing climate on EU migration.

The overarching aim of this edited volume is to investigate different modes, patterns and determinants of youth political participation in Greece, since the economic crisis, by incorporating a variety of quantitative and qualitative methods. The chapters examine different forms of youth political participation, from institutionalized (such as voting, or membership in political parties) to non-institutionalized (such as signing petitions, protesting through demonstrations or occupations, and political consumerism). Moreover, the chapters shed light on diverse aspects of youth political participation, such as the interlinkages between occupational precarity and political behaviour, the spatial portrait of youth political engagement in rural, suburban and urban Greek contexts, the engendered aspects of political involvement, the pivotal role of protest events in youth political socialization and in mobilization in contentious political actions, the different impacts of priming inequality on youth’s political beliefs, depending on different modes of thinking, as well as the key features of youth-related and youth-led (non-state) organisations operating in Greece. The aforementioned aspects are examined at the micro, meso or/and macro level through distinct methodological approaches including panel survey, experimental survey, biographical interviews, in-depth interviews and action organization analysis, carried out in the context of the EURYKA (European Commission) project.
