Foundations of Mathematics and other Logical Essays

Foundations of Mathematics and other Logical Essays PDF Author: Frank Plumpton Ramsey
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1134528035
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 311

Book Description
This is Volume V in a series of eight on the Philosophy of Logic and Mathematics. Originally published in 1931, this study offers a collection of logical essays around the topic of the foundations of mathematics. Though mathematical teaching was Ramsey's profession, philosophy was his vocation. Reared on the logic of Principia Mathematica, he was early to see the importance of Dr. Wittgenstein's work (in the translation of which he assisted); and his own published papers were largely based on this. But the previously unprinted essays and notes collected in this volume show him moving towards a kind of pragmatism, and the general treatise on logic upon which at various times he had been engaged was to have treated truth and knowledge as purely natural phenomena to be explained psychologically without recourse to distinctively logical relations.

Mathematics and Its Logics

Mathematics and Its Logics PDF Author: Geoffrey Hellman
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316999602
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 296

Book Description
In these essays Geoffrey Hellman presents a strong case for a healthy pluralism in mathematics and its logics, supporting peaceful coexistence despite what appear to be contradictions between different systems, and positing different frameworks serving different legitimate purposes. The essays refine and extend Hellman's modal-structuralist account of mathematics, developing a height-potentialist view of higher set theory which recognizes indefinite extendability of models and stages at which sets occur. In the first of three new essays written for this volume, Hellman shows how extendability can be deployed to derive the axiom of Infinity and that of Replacement, improving on earlier accounts; he also shows how extendability leads to attractive, novel resolutions of the set-theoretic paradoxes. Other essays explore advantages and limitations of restrictive systems - nominalist, predicativist, and constructivist. Also included are two essays, with Solomon Feferman, on predicative foundations of arithmetic.

The Foundations of Mathematics and Other Logical Essays

The Foundations of Mathematics and Other Logical Essays PDF Author: Frank Plumpton Ramsey
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category : Logic
Languages : en
Pages : 332

Book Description
Collection of works by Frank Plumpton Ramsey (1903-1930), who made seminal contributions to philosophy, mathematics and economics. Whilst he was acknowledged as a genius by his contemporaries, some of his most important ideas were not appreciated until decades later; now better appreciated, they continue to bear an influence upon contemporary philosophy. His historic significance was to usher in a new phase of analytic philosophy, which initially built upon the logical atomist doctrines of Bertrand Russell and Ludwig Wittgenstein, raising their ideas to a new level of sophistication, but ultimately he became their successor rather than remain a mere acolyte.

Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics

Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics PDF Author: Wilfried Sieg
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316998819
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages :

Book Description
Since their inception, the Perspectives in Logic and Lecture Notes in Logic series have published seminal works by leading logicians. Many of the original books in the series have been unavailable for years, but they are now in print once again. This volume, the fifteenth publication in the Lecture Notes in Logic series, collects papers presented at the symposium 'Reflections on the Foundations of Mathematics' held in celebration of Solomon Feferman's 70th birthday (The 'Feferfest') at Stanford University, California in 1988. Feferman has shaped the field of foundational research for nearly half a century. These papers reflect his broad interests as well as his approach to foundational research, which emphasizes the solution of mathematical and philosophical problems. There are four sections, covering proof theoretic analysis, logic and computation, applicative and self-applicative theories, and philosophy of modern mathematical and logic thought.

Mathematics in Philosophy

Mathematics in Philosophy PDF Author: Charles D. Parsons
Publisher: Cornell University Press
ISBN: 1501729322
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 367

Book Description
This important book by a major American philosopher brings together eleven essays treating problems in logic and the philosophy of mathematics. A common point of view, that mathematical thought is central to our thought in general, underlies the essays. In his introduction, Parsons articulates that point of view and relates it to past and recent discussions of the foundations of mathematics. Mathematics in Philosophy is divided into three parts. Ontology—the question of the nature and extent of existence assumptions in mathematics—is the subject of Part One and recurs elsewhere. Part Two consists of essays on two important historical figures, Kant and Frege, and one contemporary, W. V. Quine. Part Three contains essays on the three interrelated notions of set, class, and truth.

Essays on the Foundations of Mathematics by Moritz Pasch

Essays on the Foundations of Mathematics by Moritz Pasch PDF Author: Stephen Pollard
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9048194164
Category : Mathematics
Languages : en
Pages : 248

Book Description
Moritz Pasch (1843-1930) is justly celebrated as a key figure in the history of axiomatic geometry. Less well known are his contributions to other areas of foundational research. This volume features English translations of 14 papers Pasch published in the decade 1917-1926. In them, Pasch argues that geometry and, more surprisingly, number theory are branches of empirical science; he provides axioms for the combinatorial reasoning essential to Hilbert’s program of consistency proofs; he explores "implicit definition" (a generalization of definition by abstraction) and indicates how this technique yields an "empiricist" reconstruction of set theory; he argues that we cannot fully understand the logical structure of mathematics without clearly distinguishing between decidable and undecidable properties; he offers a rare glimpse into the mind of a master of axiomatics, surveying in detail the thought experiments he employed as he struggled to identify fundamental mathematical principles; and much more. This volume will: Give English speakers access to an important body of work from a turbulent and pivotal period in the history of mathematics, help us look beyond the familiar triad of formalism, intuitionism, and logicism, show how deeply we can see with the help of a guide determined to present fundamental mathematical ideas in ways that match our human capacities, will be of interest to graduate students and researchers in logic and the foundations of mathematics.

Logic, Mathematics, Philosophy, Vintage Enthusiasms

Logic, Mathematics, Philosophy, Vintage Enthusiasms PDF Author: David DeVidi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400702140
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 487

Book Description
The volume includes twenty-five research papers presented as gifts to John L. Bell to celebrate his 60th birthday by colleagues, former students, friends and admirers. Like Bell’s own work, the contributions cross boundaries into several inter-related fields. The contributions are new work by highly respected figures, several of whom are among the key figures in their fields. Some examples: in foundations of maths and logic (William Lawvere, Peter Aczel, Graham Priest, Giovanni Sambin); analytical philosophy (Michael Dummett, William Demopoulos), philosophy of science (Michael Redhead, Frank Arntzenius), philosophy of mathematics (Michael Hallett, John Mayberry, Daniel Isaacson) and decision theory and foundations of economics (Ken Bimore). Most articles are contributions to current philosophical debates, but contributions also include some new mathematical results, important historical surveys, and a translation by Wilfrid Hodges of a key work of arabic logic.
