Category : Religion
Languages : en

Book Description
The Old Testament remains a closed book for many people. But as respected biblical scholar Mary Deeley amply demonstrates, Christians have much to gain by delving deeper into it-doing so can strengthen our relationship with God, and allow us to grow in personal faith and connectedness to the stories of the Bible. Mothers, Lovers, Priests, Prophets, and Kings explores the world of the Hebrew Scriptures in ways that will benefit the casual and experienced reader alike. Employing humor and insight, Deeley examines many well-known and not so well-known stories, showing how they contribute to understanding God and ourselves. Get to know Sarah, Abraham, Elijah, Rahab, Ruth, and many more and see how their experiences relate to your life today. This book offers a deeper appreciation of the nature of Scripture as a Living Word, a greater understanding of the connection between God in the Old Testament and God in the New, and a better awareness of the multifaceted nature of God's interaction with us. A reflection with helpful questions for individual guided meditation and for small group discussion follows each story. View sample pages. "Paperback"

Women Preachers and Prophets through Two Millennia of Christianity

Women Preachers and Prophets through Two Millennia of Christianity PDF Author: Beverly Mayne Kienzle
Publisher: Univ of California Press
ISBN: 0520919270
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 386

Book Description
For nearly two millennia, despite repeated prohibitions, Christian women have preached. Some have preached in official settings; others have found alternative routes for expression. Prophecy, teaching, writing, and song have all filled a broad definition of preaching. This anthology, with essays by an international group of scholars from several disciplines, investigates the diverse voices of Christian women who claimed the authority to preach and prophesy. The contributors examine the centuries of arguments, grounded in Pauline injunctions, against women's public speech and the different ways women from the early years of the church through the twentieth century have nonetheless exercised religious leadership in their communities. Some of them based their authority solely on divine inspiration; others were authorized by independent-minded communities; a few were even recognized by the church hierarchy. With its lively accounts of women preachers and prophets in the Christian tradition, this exceptionally well-documented collection will interest scholars and general readers alike.

The Son of Seven Mothers

The Son of Seven Mothers PDF Author: Benjamin Risha
Publisher: WildBlue Press
ISBN: 1952225078
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
A man shares his story of growing up in a late 20th-century American cult—and how he escaped—in this gripping autobiography. As the adopted son of two cult leaders, Benjamin Risha was raised to someday assume a place of leadership in the Alamo Christian Foundation, with the Bible, and his parents’ interpretations of it, as his guide. He believed the prophecies of his adoptive mother and father, Tony and Susan Alamo, including them being the two prophets foretold in the Book of Revelations who precede the second coming of Jesus Christ, them rising from the dead after they died, and such dire warnings as the ground opening up to swallow non-believers into hell. And he was sure that Susan Alamo could raise the dead as promised. However, when none of it happened, and the foundation slid from bucolic communal lifestyle to insufferable criminality that included absolute obedience to the Alamos, and polygamous marriages with girls as young as eight years old, Benjamin knew he had to escape. If he were caught trying to escape, he would be severely beaten, forced to go without food and water for his sins, and shamed in the community. So, he embarked on a journey to locate his birth parents, discover the truth about a world he knew nothing about . . . and find himself. In The Son of Seven Mothers, Benjamin Risha takes readers on a harrowing journey that few in the United States can imagine. And eventually he must choose between the life he knows and was “chosen” to lead, and his freedom.

The Mothers of the Believers - Wives of Prophet Muhammad (saw)

The Mothers of the Believers - Wives of Prophet Muhammad (saw) PDF Author: Halime Demiresik
Publisher: Dar UL Thaqafah
ISBN: 9789388850636
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 306

Book Description
One of the most important characteristics which form a perfect and concrete example of the Prophet Muhammad (saw) is the way he lived his family life. He established a superior, most virtuous and happiest home with his wives who had different ages, cultures, abilities and characters. That home that he established was so full of patience and beauty that the scent of happiness covered them even though, for days, they were not able to cook a single hot meal (due to lack of food). In addition, in that holy home, the room of each wife was merely a place to lay one's head. However, in that home the most delicious provisions were acceptance, patience, and submission. His education method that he practiced in his family life filled their hearts with a limitless devotion and affection. No wife can love their husband to the degree that the Holy Mothers loved the Prophet (saw). No husband can love his wife to the degree of the Messenger's love for his holy wives. No child can love his or her father to the degree that Hz. Fatima loved her father. No father can love their child as much as Allah's Messenger loved Hz. Fatima. This is also true for grandchildren... Our mother Hz. Fatima, the apple of the eye of the Ehl- Bayt, who was one of the rare roses of this exceptional rose garden, means many things to the mothers and fathers these days: her life was short but adorned with taqwa, the awareness of Allah (swt). She shows them, in a lively way, that raising a child required a big effort and responsibility and that the children's futures were in Allah's hands. The only purpose in that spiritual home; which had between its members a sense of deep affection, sacrifice, and attachment; was the reaching of Allah's acceptance. in that home the biggest worry was about losing Allah's (swt) and His Messenger's (saw) affection and acceptance. The Prophet's (saw) exceptional wives, were the recipient of the honor of being the "Mothers of the Believers" by Allah's command. They observed the Prophet (saw) as he received the inspirations of Quran, and while he was praying, while he was reading Quran, eating, speaking, and sleeping: shortly, in every point of life, they were cognizant of his spiritual mysteries which were far from all other eyes. They past their lives with the sensitivity of deserving this big honor and virtue and they became, to the women of the ummah (community), the best guides and teachers. Thousands of hadiths were reported from them which explain the characteristics, attitude and sunnet (actions and sayings) of the Prophet (saw).
