Modern cities are prone to various natural and human-made hazards. To deal with these challenges, an effective risk analysis, reduction and management tool is required for all relevant threats. In recent years, a risk analysis and safety management system called the Multi-Hazards Shanghai (MH-SH) system was developed by the Shanghai Institute of Disaster Prevention and Relief to serve the policy makers of government in Shanghai for various disaster decision making of prevention and mitigation. The system can handle various disasters including earthquake, flood, typhoon and man-made fire that affect the operational security of Shanghai. In the paper, the general frame of the MH-SH system was briefly presented. Advanced methodologies and technologies were discussed for their capability of enhancing the platform in multi-disaster monitoring, detection, prediction and management. Finally, the way to the future development of the MH-SH system was concluded.

Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 044318643X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 328

Book Description
This book is the culmination of the author’s research on Urban Risk Management, based on research on practical applications on risk prevention and control practice in the industry. The main goal of this book is to make clear the concept of urban risk, analyse the objects to urban risk management, form a cognitive framework, arrange the practice on Chinese urban risk management, and finally to form a workable urban risk management system. Systematically discusses urban risk prevention and control in terms of its main forces, mechanisms, systems, and capabilities and presents a multidimensional pyramidal management framework between society, market, and government Improves the typology of academic courses related to urban risk management and clarifies different branches of theoretical concepts and practical applications Provides a solid foundation for an understanding of how urban risks evolve from accidents or incidents and identifies characteristics and patterns in risk sources Proposes three mechanisms: co-governance, refined prevention and control, and multilayered guarantees as part of the full-lifecycle perspective in risk prevention, control, and management

Mountain Risks: From Prediction to Management and Governance

Mountain Risks: From Prediction to Management and Governance PDF Author: Theo Van Asch
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9400767692
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 413

Book Description
This book offers a cross disciplinary treatment of the rapidly growing field of integrated approaches in risk assessment in mountainous areas. All major aspects related to hazard and risk assessment, risk management, and governance are illustrated with a wide range of case studies. The first part of the book focuses on new techniques for assessing the natural hazards of different types of mass movements. State-of-the-art techniques for morphological characterization and monitoring of displacements are described. Computational advances are covered to explain the process systems and to quantify the hazards of fast and slow-moving landslides. In the second part of the book methodologies are included for assessing the impact of these natural hazards on the society in terms of risks. In this part, methodologies for defining the vulnerability of the elements at risk are shown and the use of run-out models for risk assessment of the dangerous rapid mass movements are evaluated. The third part of the book focuses on the response of society towards the problems of hazard and risk. It highlights the role of spatial planning, early warning systems and evacuation plans for risk management. It establishes practical thresholds for acceptable and tolerable risks and emphasizes the importance of education and communication to society. Audience The book is of interest to a wide range of experts from related disciplines, practitioners and stakeholders to demonstrate the importance of an integrated approach for all aspects of risks in mountainous areas.

Institutional Partnerships in Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems

Institutional Partnerships in Multi-Hazard Early Warning Systems PDF Author: Maryam Golnaraghi
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642253733
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 243

Book Description
This book documents seven examples of Early Warning Systems for hydrometeorological and other hazards that have proven effective in reducing losses due to these hazards. The cases studied encompass a variety of climatic regimes and stages of economic development, raging across the industrialized countries of Germany, France, Japan and the United States, to Bangladesh, the island nation of Cuba and the mega-city of Shanghai. Demonstrated characteristics of these exemplary cases are synthesized into ten guiding principles for successful early warning systems that will, it is hoped, prove useful to countries seeking to develop or strengthen such systems within their own borders.
