Chemistry and Biology of Synthetic Retinoids

Chemistry and Biology of Synthetic Retinoids PDF Author: Marcia I. Dawson
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1351079085
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 627

Book Description
The purpose of this book is to present an overview of advances in both retinal and retinoic acid synthetic chemistry and biology. Chapters are written by research workers who are active in these fields. Emphasis is placed on structure-activity relationships. It includes topics of cell differentiation, maintenance of cell morphology, and vision. This reference contains a special section on assays which were developed to measure retinoid activity. This book is ideal for those interested in the fields of photobiology, organic chemistry, biological chemistry, and nutrition.

Progress in Medicinal Chemistry

Progress in Medicinal Chemistry PDF Author:
Publisher: Elsevier
ISBN: 9780080862781
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 395

Book Description
In this volume, the medicinal chemistry of the rapidly expanding family of retinoids, of promising semi-synthetic erythromycins and of the multifaceted amidines is reviewed. Another chapter continues the coverage of inorganic elements which have a medical role; recent studies on the various biological roles of manganese are also examined. Inhibition of enkephalin-degrading enzymes is reviewed, as are studies of the digitalis recognition site which are expected to lead to the development of more highly selective inotropic drugs. This work should be of value to medicinal chemists, pharmacists and pharmacologists. It should also be appreciated by all newcomers, as well as those who wish to be kept up to date with recent work on these topics.

Retinoids

Retinoids PDF Author: Heinz Nau
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 3642584837
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 631

Book Description
In the future' the decade of the 1990s will likely be viewed as a Golden Age for retinoid research. There have been unprecedented research gains in the understanding of retinoid actions and physiology; since the retinoid nuclear receptors were first identified and the importance of retinoic acid in develop mental processes was first broadly recognized in the late 1980s. Between then and now, our knowledge of retinoid action has evolved from one of a near complete lack of understanding of how retinoids act within cells to one of sophisticated understanding of the molecular processes through which retinoids modulate transcription. In this volume, we have tried to provide a comprehensive update of the present understanding of retinoid actions, with an emphasis on re cent advances. The initial chapters of the volume, or Section A, focus on the physicochemical properties and metabolism of naturally occurring retinoids: - N OY provides an uncommonly encountered view of retinoid effects from the perspective of the physiochemical properties of retinoids. - V AKIANI and BUCK lend a perspective on the biological occurrence and actions of retro- and anhydro-retinoids. Section B considers both the retinoid nuclear receptors and their mechanisms of action as well as synthetic retinoids that have been used exper imentally to provide mechanistic insights into receptor actions and have potential therapeutic use for treating disease: - PIEDRAFITA and PFAHL provide a comprehensive review of retinoid nuclear receptor biochemistry and molecular biology.

Biology of Carcinogenesis

Biology of Carcinogenesis PDF Author: M.J. Waring

Book Description
There is no shonage of books on cancer. Why publish another? Simply because the subject is important: possibly the most important challenge facing medicine today, and consequently the focus of one of the faslest-growing areas of fundamental biological research. The quest to understand and control cancer is so absorbing that from time 10 time we really need to pause for a moment and try to take stock of the situation. Given the sheer breadth of cancer-related research that is not an easy task. This book, together with its planned successors in the series Cancer Biology and Medicine. represents our attempt to draw back from the bench or the bedside for a moment and take a slightly longer look at what we are doing, what we are trying to do, and where we stand. It is impossible to be comprehensive or even representative of more than a fraction of relevant knowledge. but that is no excuse for not trying to see things in perspective. Accordingly we set out to persuade a number of our colleagues to join us in writing a book which might admit a little fresh air into the confined atmosphere within which we mostly work: a glimpse, perhaps. of fresh vistas.

Vitamin A Deficiency

Vitamin A Deficiency PDF Author: Alfred Sommer
Publisher:
ISBN: 9780195088243
Category : Public health
Languages : en
Pages : 476

Book Description
Many studies over the past decade and a half have indicated that vitamin A status is an important determinant of health. The World Bank now estimates that vitamin A intervention programs are some of the most cost-effective health strategies globally. This new book, written by leadinginvestigators in the field, is the first to synthesize the many important studies to date. The authors identify and quantify the biological, clinical and public health impact of vitamin A deficiency on childhood growth, mortality and morbidity, including anemia and blindness. They deal with theepidemiologic and biological basis of these findings, and with the prevention and treatment of these disorders, particularly of measles, diarrhea and xeorophthalmia. Alternative approaches to identifying individuals and populations in need of intervention, alternative strategies for improvingvitamin A and carotenoids, and the relationship between vitamin A and immunity are discussed. This comprehensive volume on a critically important and widespread nutritional deficiency will serve as a unique resource for nutritionists, physicians, public health workers and policy makers, and will beespecially relevant to clinicians and researchers in international health.
