Excerpt from book: Spirit, and in the History of the World regard everything as only its manifestation, we have, in traversing the past? however extensive its periods?only to do with what is present; for philosophy, as occupying itself with the True, has to do with the eternally fresenL Nothing in the past is lost for it, for the Idea is ever present; Spirit is immortal; with it there is no past, no future, but an essential now. This necessarily implies that the present form of Spirit comprehends within it all earlier steps. These have indeed unfolded themselves in succession independently; but what Spirit is it has always been essentially; distinctions are only the development of this essential nature. The life of the ever present Spirit is a circle of progressive embodiments, which looked at in one aspect still exist beside each other, and only as looked at from another point of view appear as past. The grades which Spirit seems to have left behind it, it still possesses in the depths of its present. GEOGRAPHICAL BASIS OF HISTORY Contrasted with the universality of the moral Whole and with the unity of that individuality which is its active principle, the natural connecticm that helps to produce the Spirit of a People, appears an extrinsic element; but inasmuch as we must regard it as the ground on which that Spirit plays its part, it is an essential and necessary basis. We began with the assertion that, in the History of the World, the Idea of Spirit appears in its actual embodiment as a series of external forms, each one of which declares itself as an actually existing people. This existence falls under the category of Time as well as Space, in the way of natural existence; and the special principle, which every world-historical people embodies, has this principle at the same time as a nat...

Quotes for Misanthropes

Quotes for Misanthropes PDF Author: Bruce Ladd Gary
Publisher: Bruce L Gary
ISBN: 0979844622
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 96

Book Description
Humans have always been interested in identifying and exposing hypocrisy. Many collections of quotations have been written, and many of the entries are clever treatments of human hypocrisy. The term "human hypocrisy" is redundant, for only humans are hypocritical. Indeed, one theory for the evolution of language suggests that the capacity for speech was driven by the payoffs for misleading others. Since hypocrisy is unique to humans, and since it appears to be a "human universal" (found in all cultures), I have coined the term "Homo Hypocritus" as a mocking reference to our species. Misanthropes are people who are profoundly disappointed in the shortcomings of human nature. We are unwilling to surrender hope for the day when humans will remake themselves to be worthy of the lofty opinion they have always had for themselves. Since misanthropes wish for human improvement, it is natural for them to be keen on identifying things needing improvement. Many of the quotations within these pages are material for some future project at converting Homo hypocritus to Homo sapiens. This book consists of two parts. The first 80% is a collection of quotes from the literature that capture the essential hypocritical core of human nature, and the remainder of the book consists of the author's attempts at pithy one-liners. Most of the quotations in this book are "politically correct" - which is to say that some are not. The author does not wish to offend, and is confident that almost anyone will enjoy this collection of quotes.

Book Description
2019 Reprint of 1894 Edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition software. The Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences by Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel (first published in 1817) is a work that presents an abbreviated version of Hegel's systematic philosophy in its entirety and is the only form in which Hegel ever published his entire mature philosophical system. The fact that the account is exhaustive, that the grounding structures of reality are ideal, and that the system is closed makes the Encyclopedia a statement par excellence of absolute idealism. The present work represents part three of the Encyclopaedia of the Philosophical Sciences published separately as Hegel's Philosophy of Mind. This scholarly translated by undertaken by William Wallace and published by Oxford University Press.
