For most English-speaking readers, Russian literature consists of a small number of individual writers - nineteenth-century masters such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Turgenev - or a few well-known works - Chekhov's plays, Brodsky's poems, and perhaps Master and Margarita and Doctor Zhivago from the twentieth century. The medieval period, as well as the brilliant tradition of Russian lyric poetry from the eighteenth century to the present, are almost completely terra incognita, as are the complex prose experiments of Nikolai Gogol, Nikolai Leskov, Andrei Belyi, and Andrei Platonov. Furthermore, those writers who have made an impact are generally known outside of the contexts in which they wrote and in which their work has been received. In this engaging book, Andrew Baruch Wachtel and Ilya Vinitsky provide a comprehensive, conceptually challenging history of Russian literature, including prose, poetry and drama. Each of the ten chapters deals with a bounded time period from medieval Russia to the present. It is evident that descriptions of social groups and classes or reproductions of spiritual gropings must form an element of every literature, the writers being children of their times, members of their nations, and drawing their experience from immediate surroundings. Yet hardly any literature equals the Russian in reproducing the spiritual struggles of men, and few western writers have been as willing as their Russian colleagues to go down to the very bottom of everyday existence and to scrutinize the economic, the social, and the political life of their country. This makes Russian literature a valuable object of study not only as art, but also as the surest road to the understanding of the Russian people and Russian conditions. The task of the present volume is to be of assistance in such studies. Excerpt from Selected List of Russian Books No list exists of Russian books suitable for public libraries in English, French, German or Russian, and the increasing interest in Russia, as well as the growing Slav immigration, has created a demand for a guide in purchasing Russian books, printed in Latin characters, with annotations and other bibliographical information in English. The Free Public Library Commission of Massachusetts in offering this list wishes to express its thanks and appreciation to Mrs. L. Haffkin-Hamburger and Dr. Aurelius Palmieri whose interest and advice have added greatly to the value of the work. Mrs. Haffkin-Hamburger, lecturer in library economy at Shaniawsky University, Moscow, was in the United States during the summer of 1914, and from her visits to libraries in this country was in a position to judge just what sort of books would be most appreciated by the Russian people who use our public libraries.
