(about 1200 A.D.) in interdicting all Christian rites save baptism by the clergy in France: "O how horrible ... to refuse the Christian rite of burial to the bodies of the dead, so that they infected the air by their foetor and struck horror into the souls of the living by their ghastly looks[23]."
