Studienarbeit aus dem Jahr 2018 im Fachbereich Filmwissenschaft, Note: 1,0, Freie Universität Berlin, Veranstaltung: Filmgeschichte, Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Die folgende Arbeit analysiert, wie die bisher verstreute ästhetische und intellektuelle Bewegung unter dem Wort Afrofuturismus zusammengefasst wurde. Darüber hinaus, wie das Genre entstand, sich entwickelte und etablierte. Der Film BLACK PANTHER popularisierte diese Bewegung und ließ sie zur Mainstream-Bewegung hinzufließen. Dabei fassen unterschiedliche Quellen den Afrofuturismus entweder als Ästhetik oder als Genre auf, was schwer zu trennen ist. Aufgrund des Umfangs kann der Diskurs über diese Dualität nicht eingebunden werden. Die Tendenz geht eher in die Richtung im Folgenden die Genreaspekte aufzugreifen. Der Begriff Afrofuturismus setzt sich aus zwei bedeutungsvollen Wörtern zusammen: Afro und Futurismus. Das Wort Afro ist ein Affix, das afrikanisch, folglich aus Afrika stammend, bedeutet und sich unter anderem in Wörtern wie Afroamerikaner oder Afrodeutscher befindet (Duden 1976). Futurism bedeutet auf Englisch “concern with events and trends of the future, or which anticipate the future”. Auf den ersten Blick können diese zwei Wörter widersprüchlich erscheinen, da in den Medien sowohl Afrika (Esuh 2003) als auch Personen der afrikanischen Diaspora meistens in dystopischen Situationen und mit wenig Hoffnung für die Zukunft dargestellt werden. Afrofuturismus versucht dieses Bild außer Kraft zu setzen, indem Schwarze Menschen in futuristischen, Science-Fiction und/oder alternativen Szenarien dargestellt werden. In ihrem Werk “Afrofuturist Manifesto” definiert Ytasha Womack Afrofuturismus als eine Schnittstelle zwischen Fantasie, Technologie, Zukunft und Befreiung: “Both an artistic aesthetic and a framework for critical theory, Afrofuturism combines elements of science fiction, historical fiction, speculative fiction, fantasy, Afrocentricity, and magic realism with non-Western beliefs” (Womack 2013). Yaszek beschreibt Afrofuturismus als eine globale ästhetische Bewegung, die Kunst, Film, Literatur, Musik und Wissenschaft umfasst und durch afrikanische und afrodiasporische Autoren*innen kreiert wird. Diese Autoren*innen versuchen ihre Vergangenheit mit der Gegenwart und der Zukunft zu verbinden: “Afrofuturists artist are interested in recovering lost black histories and thinking about how those histories inform a whole range of black cultures today. A survey from October 2017 has shown that almost all of the black people who responded to it (92 percent) said they felt that discrimination against African-Americans exists in America today. Furthermore, at least half said they had personally experienced racial discrimination concerning equal pay, employment, and promotions, or in their encounters with police, but also when going to a doctor or a health clinic. Many of these surveys illustrate the discrimination today of especially African Americans in the United States and hence their dissatisfaction with the political situation in the country concerning the treatment of colored people. Despite the civil rights movement during the 1950s and 1960s, which was a struggle for social justice for blacks to gain equal rights under the law in the United States, discrimination against blacks did not end then (History). Even though the Civil War (1861-1865) officially abolished slavery, African Americans continued to endure the devastating effects of racism, especially in the South (History).
