50 KW Class Krypton Hall Thruster Performance

50 KW Class Krypton Hall Thruster Performance PDF Author: National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA)

Book Description
The performance of a 50-kilowatt-class Hall thruster designed for operation on xenon propellant was measured using kryton propellant. The thruster was operated at discharge power levels ranging from 6.4 to 72.5 kilowatts. The device produced thrust ranging from 0.3 to 2.5 newtons. The thruster was operated at discharge voltages between 250 and 1000 volts. At the highest anode mass flow rate and discharge voltage and assuming a 100 percent singly charged condition, the discharge specific impulse approached the theoretical value. Discharge specific impulse of 4500 seconds was demonstrated at a discharge voltage of 1000 volts. The peak discharge efficiency was 64 percent at 650 volts. Jacobson, David T. and Manzella, David H. Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion

Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion PDF Author: Dan M. Goebel
Publisher: John Wiley & Sons
ISBN: 0470436263
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 528

Book Description
Throughout most of the twentieth century, electric propulsion was considered the technology of the future. Now, the future has arrived. This important new book explains the fundamentals of electric propulsion for spacecraft and describes in detail the physics and characteristics of the two major electric thrusters in use today, ion and Hall thrusters. The authors provide an introduction to plasma physics in order to allow readers to understand the models and derivations used in determining electric thruster performance. They then go on to present detailed explanations of: Thruster principles Ion thruster plasma generators and accelerator grids Hollow cathodes Hall thrusters Ion and Hall thruster plumes Flight ion and Hall thrusters Based largely on research and development performed at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) and complemented with scores of tables, figures, homework problems, and references, Fundamentals of Electric Propulsion: Ion and Hall Thrusters is an indispensable textbook for advanced undergraduate and graduate students who are preparing to enter the aerospace industry. It also serves as an equally valuable resource for professional engineers already at work in the field.

A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs

A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309102472
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 288

Book Description
Rocket and air-breathing propulsion systems are the foundation on which planning for future aerospace systems rests. A Review of United States Air Force and Department of Defense Aerospace Propulsion Needs assesses the existing technical base in these areas and examines the future Air Force capabilities the base will be expected to support. This report also defines gaps and recommends where future warfighter capabilities not yet fully defined could be met by current science and technology development plans.

Rocket and Spacecraft Propulsion
