Organic Chemicals in the Aquatic Environment

Organic Chemicals in the Aquatic Environment PDF Author: Alasdair H. Neilson
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 9781315896168
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 448

Book Description
Organic Chemicals in the Aquatic Environment draws from the author's experience with a variety of problems dealing with the fate, distribution, and toxicity of organic compounds in the aquatic environment. It discusses the basic issues of chemical analysis, distribution, persistence, and ecotoxicology, with an emphasis on microbial reactions. The necessary input and the difficulties of achieving a rigorous synthesis of the various elements are illustrated with specific examples. The book includes a wide range of structurally diverse compounds as illustration and presents a mechanistic approach to biodegradation and biotransformation. The final chapter addresses the issue of environmental hazard assessment and constructs a strategy for carrying it out.

Identifying Future Drinking Water Contaminants

Identifying Future Drinking Water Contaminants PDF Author: National Research Council
Publisher: National Academies Press
ISBN: 0309064325
Category : Nature
Languages : en
Pages : 277

Book Description
With an increasing population, use of new and diverse chemicals that can enter the water supply, and emergence of new microbial pathogens, the U.S. federal government is faced with a regulatory dilemma: Where should it focus its attention and limited resources to ensure safe drinking water supplies for the future? Identifying Future Drinking Water Contaminants is based on a 1998 workshop on emerging drinking water contaminants. It includes a dozen papers that were presented on new and emerging microbiological and chemical drinking water contaminants, associated analytical and water treatment methods for their detection and removal, and existing and proposed environmental databases to assist in their proactive identification and regulation. The papers are preceded by a conceptual approach and related recommendations to EPA for the periodic creation of future Drinking Water Contaminant Candidate Lists (CCLsâ€"produced every five yearsâ€"include currently unregulated chemical and microbiological substances that are known or anticipated to occur in public water systems and that may pose health risks).

Biomonitoring of Trace Aquatic Contaminants

Biomonitoring of Trace Aquatic Contaminants PDF Author: David J.H. Phillips
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 9401121222
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 380

Book Description
Twenty years ago, researchers wishing to identify contaminated areas in aquatic environments generally took water samples, and analysed them badly (as we have since discovered) for a few "pollutants" which were of topical note at the time (and which could be quantified by the methods then available). Today, the use of aquatic organisms as biomonitors in preference to water analysis has become commonplace, and many national and interna tional programmes exist around the world involving such studies. We believe that this trend will continue, and have complete faith in the methodology (when it is employed correctly). We hope that the following text assists in some part in attaining this goal, such that the quality of our most basic global resource -water - is adequately protected in the future. DAVE PHILLIPS, PHIL RAINBOW England, March 1992 vii Acknowledgements Our thanks for contributions to this book are due to several individuals and groups, for varying reasons. Firstly, a co-authored book is always a triumph, and we trust that the following text is an acceptable compromise of the views of two individual authors, on a complex and developing topic. Secondly, many of the ideas herein have crystallised over the last two decades as the field has grown, and we are individually and collectively grateful to a number of researchers for their insight and assistance.

Laboratory Experiments in Trace Environmental Quantitative Analysis

Laboratory Experiments in Trace Environmental Quantitative Analysis PDF Author: Paul R. Loconto
Publisher: CRC Press
ISBN: 1000568776
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 168

Book Description
Laboratory Experiments in Trace Environmental Quantitative Analysis is a collection of student-tested experiments that introduce important principles that underlie various laboratory techniques in the field of trace environmental organics and inorganics quantitative analysis. It crosses the more traditional academic disciplines of environmental science and analytical chemistry. The text is organized to begin with minimally rigorous session/experiments and increase in rigor as each session/experiment unfolds. Each experiment features learning objectives, expected student outcomes, and suggestions for further study. Additional features include: Students are introduced to the principles and laboratory practice of instrumental analysis (determinative techniques) that are clearly presented. Students are carefully taken through various ways to prepare samples for trace quantitative analysis (sample prep techniques). Safety warnings are listed within each experiment. Students are introduced to all three types of instrument calibration: external, internal and standard addition. Instructors who are responsible for laboratory courses in analytical chemistry with potential application to environmental sample matrices will find this textbook of value. Graduate programs in environmental science and engineering will also greatly benefit from the content.

Instrumentation for Trace Organic Monitoring

Instrumentation for Trace Organic Monitoring PDF Author: Raymond E. Clement
