Book Description

Rampart Nations

Rampart Nations PDF Author: Dr. Liliya Berezhnaya
Publisher: Berghahn Books
ISBN: 1789201489
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 416

Book Description
The “bulwark” or antemurale myth—whereby a region is imagined as a defensive barrier against a dangerous Other—has been a persistent strand in the development of Eastern European nationalisms. While historical studies of the topic have typically focused on clashes and overlaps between sociocultural and religious formations, Rampart Nations delves deeper to uncover the mutual transfers and multi-sided national and interconfessional conflicts that helped to spread bulwark myths through Europe’s eastern periphery over several centuries. Ranging from art history to theology to political science, this volume offers new ways of understanding the political, social, and religious forces that continue to shape identity in Eastern Europe.

ISBN: 3030803465
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 460

Book Description
This book brings together empirical research and conceptual work on textbooks and education media from 13 countries and 17 disciplines. Further, the book offers insights into regional and local discourses (e.g. specific theories of Portuguese- and Spanish-speaking countries as well as Nordic countries, contrasting their theories with international literature), practices, and solutions with regard to teaching selected subjects at the pre-primary, primary, secondary, and tertiary level. This book also discusses the specific combinations of subjects (e.g. Physics, Biology, Geography, Swedish, English) and their subject-specific education (e.g. Physics Education or Didactics). Lastly, it examines the work of a number of early-career researchers, giving them a voice and bringing in fresh ideas currently being developed in various countries around the globe. This proceedings volume will appeal to publishers, subject educators in primary, secondary, and tertiary education, and academic researchers from the fields of textbooks, educational media and subject-specific education. Its international authorship and explicit focus on subject-specific particularities of educational media provide a unique and comprehensive overview.

Holocaust Education 25 Years On

Holocaust Education 25 Years On PDF Author: Andy Pearce
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 042982372X
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 255

Book Description
The year 2016 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of statutory teaching and learning about the Holocaust in English state-maintained schools, which was introduced with the first English National Curriculum in 1991. The year 2016 also saw the publication of the largest empirical research study on Holocaust education outcomes – the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education’s What Do Students Know and Understand About the Holocaust? This book presents a systematic reflection on the outcomes of this quarter-century of Holocaust education in England and the Centre’s wider work to reflect on the forms and the limitations of children’s knowledge about the Holocaust and of English Holocaust education resources. These papers are then contextualised in two ways: through papers that situate English Holocaust education historiographically and in England’s wider Holocaust culture; and through papers from America, Switzerland, and Germany that place the UCL Centre for Holocaust Education’s findings in a wider and comparative perspective. Overall, the book presents unique empirical insights into teaching and learning processes and outcomes in Holocaust education and enables these to be theorised and explored systematically. The chapters in this book were originally published as a special issue of Holocaust Studies: A Journal of Culture and History.

What Shall We Tell the Children?

What Shall We Tell the Children? PDF Author: Stuart J. Foster
Publisher: IAP
ISBN: 1607525348
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 265

Book Description
The pages of this book illustrate that as instruments of socialization and sites of ideological discourse textbooks are powerful artefacts in introducing young people to a specific historical, cultural and socioeconomic order. Crucially, exploring the social construction of school textbooks and the messages they impart provides an important context from within which to critically investigate the dynamics underlying the cultural politics of education and the social movements that form it and which are formed by it. The school curriculum is essentially the knowledge system of a society incorporating its values and its dominant ideology. The curriculum is not “our knowledge” born of a broad hegemonic consensus, rather it is a battleground in which cultural authority and the right to define what is labelled legitimate knowledge is fought over. As each chapter in this book illustrates curriculum as theory and practice has never been, and can never be, divorced from the ethical, economic, political, and cultural conflicts of society which impact so deeply upon it. We cannot escape the clear implication that questions about what knowledge is of most worth and about how it should be organized and taught are problematic, contentious and very serious.
