Enriched Composition and Inference in the Argument Structure of Chinese

Enriched Composition and Inference in the Argument Structure of Chinese PDF Author: Ren Zhang
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 113587641X
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
As with many other languages, Mandarin Chinese exhibits a rich variety of ways in expressing the arguments of the predicator in a sentence. Unlike other languages, such variation is typically devoid of any formal marking. Previous attempts in explaining such phenomena usually focus on the syntax as an explanatory tool. This book argues that a large majority of such argument structure phenomena are better accounted for by recourse to enriched representations in lexical semantics. Drawing insights from conceptual semantics, cognitive semantics, Generative Lexicon, construction grammar and formal syntax, this book constitutes the first attempt at a comprehensive account of lexical semantic issues in Mandarin Chinese.

New Explorations in Chinese Theoretical Syntax

New Explorations in Chinese Theoretical Syntax PDF Author: Andrew Simpson
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027258171
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 585

Book Description
This volume brings together 19 cutting edge studies written by some of the most prominent linguists working on Chinese formal syntax, as a Festschrift volume dedicated to Yen-Hui Audrey Li. The contributions to the volume address a wide range of issues currently developing in the field of Chinese syntax, grouped into five thematic sections on the structure of lexical and functional projections, modal verb syntax, syntax-semantics interactions, the syntax and interpretation of particles, and the acquisition of syntactic structures. With its rich descriptive content sourced from different varieties of Chinese, and its theoretical orientation and analyses, the book provides an important new resource both for researchers with a primary interest in Chinese and other linguists interested in discovering how properties of Chinese can inform the analysis of other languages.

European and Chinese Cognitive Styles and their Impact on Teaching Mathematics

European and Chinese Cognitive Styles and their Impact on Teaching Mathematics PDF Author: Filippo Spagnolo
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3642116809
Category : Technology & Engineering
Languages : en
Pages : 300

Book Description
The book provides strong evidence that research on the cognitive processes from arithmetic thought to algebraic thought should take into consideration the socio-cultural context. It is an important contribution to the literature on linguistic structure in comparative studies related to Chinese student mathematics learning. This book not only makes a great contribution to research in mathematics education, the findings of this study also addressed insightful approaches and thoughts of understanding the development of algebraic thinking in cultural contexts for classroom teachers. Using written Chinese language from different theoretical references provided wonderful approaches for understanding student algebra cognitive development in a different way and calls educators for to pay special attention to an epistemological and linguistic view of algebraic development. The findings inform classroom teachers that the cultural context plays an important role in student learning mathematics. A typical analysis of the cognitive dimension involved in some in the historical and cultural contexts is a great resource for classroom teachers. I really enjoyed reading this book and learned a lot from its compelling analysis. Integrating Chinese Linguistic Research and Language Teaching and Learning

Integrating Chinese Linguistic Research and Language Teaching and Learning PDF Author: Hongyin Tao
Publisher: John Benjamins Publishing Company
ISBN: 9027266352
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 239

Book Description
Linguistic research and language teaching have generally been viewed as two separate types of academic endeavor. While linguists have been preoccupied with pattern finding and theory building, language teachers often encounter issues that are not readily addressed by theoretical linguistic research. This collection, with eleven papers touching upon a wide range of issues, stands out as one of the rare concerted efforts toward a meaningful integration of the two endeavors. Subject matters include tone, stress, word structure, grammatical categories (e.g. classifiers), syntactic structures (including argument structure), discourse particles, implicit and explicit knowledge, conversational repair, and learner corpus. With a diverse range of theoretical orientations, this collection serves to showcase some of the productive ways to create synergy between Chinese linguistic research and language education.

Syllable Weight

Syllable Weight PDF Author: Matthew Gordon
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1135922276
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 429

Book Description
The book is the first systematic exploration of a series of phonological phenomena previously thought to be unified under the rubric of syllable weight. Drawing on a typological survey of 400 languages, it is shown that the traditional conception that languages are internally consistent in their weight criteria across weight-based processes is not corroborated by the cross-linguistic survey. Rather than being consistent across phenomena within individual languages, weight turns out to be sensitive to the particular processes involved such that different phenomena display different distributions in weight criteria. The book goes on to explore the motivations behind the process-specific nature of weight, showing that phonetic factors explain much of the variation in weight criteria between phenomena and also the variation in criteria between languages for a single process. The book is unlike other studies in combining an extensive typological survey with detailed phonetic analysis of many languages. The finding that the widely studied phenomenon of syllable weight is not a unified phenomenon, contrary to the established view, is a significant result for the field of theoretical phonology. The book is also an important contribution to the field of phonetically-driven phonology, since it establishes a close link between the phonology of weight and various quantitative phonetic parameters.

Reassessing the Role of the Syllable in Italian Phonology

Reassessing the Role of the Syllable in Italian Phonology PDF Author: Kristie McCrary Kambourakis
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000143791
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en

Book Description
This book evaluates the predictions of syllable-based analyses of Italian in three domains: native speaker intuition of consonant cluster syllabification, definite article allomorphy, and segment duration, and tests the claimed convergence of multiple phenomena on the same syllable structure.
