Book Description
The story of Faulkner Hospital begins with the Faulkner family. Dr. George Faulkner's ancestry includes one of the first woolens manufacturers, a Revolutionary War colonel, and an accused Salem witch. When Dr. Faulkner's daughter Mary died, the hospital was established in her honor. Paul Revere's great-granddaughter broke ground on the hospital, which sits on land where the Peacock Tavern, owned by Samuel Adams, once stood. The original building contained 26 beds, 6 of which were free. A nursing school opened in 1903, on the day the hospital opened. Using images from the hospital's vast archives, Faulkner Hospital celebrates the hospital's centennial and explores its rich history as a leader in medicine, education, and community enrichment. Faulkner Hospital is a major teaching hospital to Harvard and Tufts Medical Schools, with many clinical firsts, like the discovery of rejuvenated blood. It is also home to world-renowned breast and headache centers and has implemented many unique concepts, including nurservers and monorails. Readers will learn about the hospital's role in the movie Whose Life Is It Anyway? and discover the famous writers, athletes, and royalty who have visited.

CELEBRATING THE HISTORY OF AMERICA'S LANDMARK INSTITUTION The fascinating true story of Brigham and Women's Hospital Founded in 1913, the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital was the first medical institution since John Hopkins to foster clinical clerkships of medical students in the environment of a modern residency program. Forging a partnership with Harvard Medical School, the Brigham would become a major innovator in clinical research, implementing a new educational model that would inspire other hospitals for generations to come. In 1980 the Brigham merged with two other Boston medical institutions boasting their own profoundly important histories, the Boston Hospital for Women and the Robert Breck Brigham Hospital, to become Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH). This rich and insightful account brings this remarkable story to life: the milestone achievements, medical breakthroughs, and personal dedication that have made BWH a world-class leader in academic medicine. The Teaching Hospital includes: A comprehensive history of BWH, from its continued commitment to medicine, education, and compassionate care to its ongoing leadership in transforming science-driven healthcare today. A compendium of BWH's famous firsts, including the nation’s first maternity ward, the first in-vitro fertilization, the first successful human organ transplant, New England's first coronary care unit, and most recently, the first full-face transplant, as well as cutting-edge research in stem cells, systems biology, and bioengineering. A celebration of Brigham's luminaries and landmarks, from pioneers like Dr. Harvey Cushing, the father of modern neurosurgery, Dr. Bernard Lown, Nobel Peace Prize winning cardiologist, and Paul Farmer, co-founder of Partners in Health, to the hospital's milestone breakthroughs in radiology, arthritis, transplant surgery, immunology, women's health, community health, and more. With invaluable contributions from medical historians and doctors, this essential volume provides an in-depth history of the institution. Here is the evolution of BWH in all its dimensions: its reputation as an education and clinical innovator, its role in fostering groundbreaking biomedical research, its ties to the local community as well as to the nation and the world, its financial and administrative growth across the decades, the personalities who have made BWH famous, and the fascinating inner life of the hospital. Filled with stories of profound commitment, critical analysis, and behind-the-scenes details, the book celebrates the Brigham’s history in both a medical and cultural context.

Principles of Orthopedic Practice for Primary Care Providers

Principles of Orthopedic Practice for Primary Care Providers PDF Author: Jeffrey N. Katz
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319686615
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 409

Book Description
Primary care providers (physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants) make decisions on a daily basis regarding treatments for musculoskeletal problems, including referrals to physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons and other specialists. Despite the large number of patients presenting with musculoskeletal complaints, primary care providers often feel poorly educated about how to assess and manage these patients This book provides a high yield and succinct resource on the assessment and management of these conditions. Written by expert orthopedic specialists at a major Harvard teaching hospital, this book fills that educational gap. Chapters overview specific body parts, typical presentations of disease, options for diagnostic testing, treatment paradigms, and anticipated outcomes of management both in the primary care setting and with a specialist. The text offers suggested pathways for working up and treating these problems with an emphasis on when referral to a specialist, or surgical intervention, is needed and when it is not. This is an ideal resource to educate primary care providers and empower them to engage in informed discussions with patients helping patients to arrive at treatment choices consonant with their preferences.

Technology and Infertility

Technology and Infertility PDF Author: Machelle M. Seibel
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1461392055
Category : Medical
Languages : en
Pages : 434

Book Description
Medicine is changing at a speed never witnessed before in history. With each passing year, medical technology achieves the capacity to provide cures and improve treatments that even a short time before were difficult to con ceptualize and impossible to provide. Reproductive technology personifies this concept perhaps better than any other field of medicine. The 1990s have seen an explosion in endoscopic and ambulatory procedures, the application of molecular biology to clinical conditions, and the refinement of assisted reproduction to allow third parties (donors and surrogates) into the process of family building. More than ever before, comprehensive medical care requires a team approach. However, the team comprises not only medical and scientific personnel, but also mental health professionals, lawyers, and ethicists. This integrated and multidisciplinary approach to medical care will become even more necessary as medical capabilities continue to develop faster than society can respond. This book reflects such an approach. It is based on a Harvard Postgraduate Course in June 1990 entitled Infertility in the 1990s: Technological Advances and Their Psychosocial Implications that was sponsored by the Faulkner Centre for Reproductive Medicine. The first half of the course was directed by Drs. M. Seibel, A. Kiessling, and C. Richards. The second half of the course was directed by Dr. M. Seibel, J. Bernstein, R. N. and S. Levin, LICSW.
