Book Description
Excerpt from Horace Mann and the Common School Revival in the United States This book aims to realize, in respect to its subject, the ideal of the series of volumes to which it belongs. From an important point of view, the history of great educators is a history of education itself. Books deal ing with such men, when written on this plan, are not only biographies, but comprehensive, although con cise, accounts of the great educational movements with which the men are identified. In other words, the single purpose of this book is to set before the reader Horace Mann as an educator, in his historical position and relations. Everything is made to bend to this central idea. The work is therefore double Horace Mann and his Historical Environment. It seeks pri marily to tell the story of Mann's life and labors simply and clearly, but in a manner to utilize some part, at least, of the great motive power with which his life is charged. The material for the life, or story proper, has been drawn mainly, but not exclusively, from the Life and Works of Horace Mann, five vol umes, Boston, 1891. Mrs. Mann's In'fe, which is Vol. I. Of the Life and Works, abounds in extracts from his letters and diaries, and also contains many letters and extracts from letters written to him. It is to a great extent a book of original materials, and its value is largely due to this fact. In some parts of the present. Book Description
Excerpt from Horace Mann: And the Public School in the United States "Without any question," Americans say, "the noblest figure in the history of education in our country is that of Horace Mann." He owes this preeminence, not only to the brilliancy of his talents and the authority of his genius, but to the circumstances, the surroundings, in which his talents and genius were called upon to play their part. He may be said to have been the right man in "the right place," and we must add, also, "at the right time." The admiration so justly awarded to Mann by his countrymen has not been denied him abroad. Felix Pecaut, to speak of no one else, has said of him: "I wish that Mann's biography might be placed in the hands, not only of all professors, but of all their pupils." Book Description
Excerpt from Horace Mann in Ohio: A Study of the Application of His Public School Ideals to College Administration This, as to the plan of the study. As to the treatment, I have tried to deal frankly and directly with the material and to find all the lessons there taught and no others. What ever value this study may have, will be chiefly to students of education, hence when two references covered the same point, I have chosen to give that which is more easily acces sible to the student; e. G., when a reference covering some point was to be found in the Life, and in a file of some local paper, I have referred to the Life. I believe that a work of this character ought to serve both the end and uses of truth, and if this study should prove to be useful and interesting as well as trustworthy, I can see no reason why these qualities should be counted against it.
