Physics in Collision

Physics in Collision PDF Author: Per Carlson
Publisher: Springer Science & Business Media
ISBN: 1468484656
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 431

Book Description
The field of particle physics is developing very rapidly. During this past year, physicists added a new instrument to their arsenal for the study of quark-quark, quark-lepton, and lepton lepton interactions. This machine, the PROTON-ANTIPROTON COLLIDER, achieved the highest energy in the world. With its five detectors, it is beginning to explore hitherto inaccessible regions for new physics (Section I). Lepton-Iepto~ machines with detectors at full efficiency are producing copious data of the very highest precision. The possibility of glueballs and the detailing of the properties of the upsilon family have been of major importance this year (Section II). The particle jets which are believed to be direct manifesta tions of the quark structure of matter continue to provide valuable data against which we can test the ideas of QCD (Section III). With the advent of more and better data it is now possible to study in detail the formation evolution of hadronic states. Especially interesting are the properties of heavy quark states (Section IV). A far-seeing look into the future development of any fecund scienti fic field is rarely accurate, but is always stimulating (Section V). It is against this background of participating in the clarifi cation of the Physics in Collision that we continue this series.

Accelerator Physics at the Tevatron Collider

Accelerator Physics at the Tevatron Collider PDF Author: Valery Lebedev
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 9781493908844
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
This book presents the developments in accelerator physics and technology implemented at the Tevatron proton-antiproton collider, the world’s most powerful accelerator for almost twenty years prior to the completion of the Large Hadron Collider. The book covers the history of collider operation and upgrades, novel arrangements of beam optics and methods of orbit control, antiproton production and cooling, beam instabilities and feedback systems, halo collimation, and advanced beam instrumentation. The topics discussed show the complexity and breadth of the issues associated with modern hadron accelerators, while providing a systematic approach needed in the design and construction of next generation colliders. This book is a valuable resource for researchers in high energy physics and can serve as an introduction for students studying the beam physics of colliders.

Instrumentation in High Energy Physics PDF Author: Fabio Sauli
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 981450632X
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 600

Book Description
This volume contains topical papers covering the various aspects of instrumentation in high energy physics. The subjects of the contributions, all previously unpublished, have been chosen to provide an overview of the fundamental processes and of the technological problems encountered in detecting, tracking and identifying charged and neutral particles in modern particle physics experiments. Each contribution offers a concise but complete description of the state-of-the-art regarding the subject, and is addressed to post-doctoral and research staff readers; it will also be found useful as a teaching aid for students and participants in specialized schools and workshops on intermediate and high energy experimental physics. Contents:Silicon Microstrip Detectors (A Peisert)The Time Projection Chamber (W Witzeling & T Lohse)Electromagnetic and Hadronic Calorimeters (P B Cushman)Fast Scintillators for High Radiation Levels (S Majewski & C Zorn)Liquid Detectors for Precision Calorimetry (M Chen et al.)Large Area and Muon Detectors (U Becker) Readership: High energy physicists. keywords:Fast Particle Detectors;Particle Identification;Calorimetry;High Energy Physics Instrumentation
