Bombarded Britain

Bombarded Britain PDF Author: Richard Stratford
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 1783261013
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 220

Book Description
This book describes a search for geological evidence of meteorite impact structures in Britain. The statistics of impact structures indicate that Britain should have Phanerozoic impact structures up to tens of kilometres in diameter. A constant theme is the importance of atmospheric break-up of small asteroids and comets. These fragmenting bodies produce anomalously shallow craters with low rims and central peaks; three British structures of this type are identified. Analysis of fireball statistics implies that damaging fireball explosions occur over the British Isles on a time-scale of decades. On a time-scale of millennia, however, more damage is done by Atlantic impact tsunami. Book Description
The Coronavirus Pandemic was the single biggest battle of humanity against the unseen. Whenever the world has ever needed answers to some prominent questions, it has either turned to history or the imagination of philosophers, scientists and also the fictionists. Science Fiction, as a genre, aims to unlock the limitations created by the 'known' and the 'real', and explore the plausible with a backdrop of experience and observation. Few of the most revered Indian Science-Fictionists have created their own renditions of the Cavid-19 story of India, predicting the best-cases, worst-cases as well as other scenarios that we could have had to face. The essence of these stories is in 'how we would have arrived at that stage and what we would have done before and after it. The more we got to learn abou the virus, the less we seemed to know about the beings of the Universe as well as our own future. And with such a rising uncertainty, all we could do was hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. -RISHABH DUBEY 'KRIDIOUS

How to Find a Habitable Planet

How to Find a Habitable Planet PDF Author: James F. Kasting
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 0691138052
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 342

Book Description
The amazing science behind the search for Earth-like planets Ever since Carl Sagan first predicted that extraterrestrial civilizations must number in the millions, the search for life on other planets has gripped our imagination. Is Earth so rare that advanced life forms like us—or even the simplest biological organisms—are unique to the universe? How to Find a Habitable Planet describes how scientists are testing Sagan's prediction, and demonstrates why Earth may not be so rare after all. James Kasting has worked closely with NASA in its mission to detect habitable worlds outside our solar system, and in this book he introduces readers to the advanced methodologies being used in this extraordinary quest. He addresses the compelling questions that planetary scientists grapple with today: What exactly makes a planet habitable? What are the signatures of life astronomers should look for when they scan the heavens for habitable worlds? In providing answers, Kasting explains why Earth has remained habitable despite a substantial rise in solar luminosity over time, and why our neighbors, Venus and Mars, haven't. If other Earth-sized planets endowed with enough water and carbon are out there, he argues, chances are good that some of those planets sustain life. Kasting describes the efforts under way to find them, and predicts that future discoveries will profoundly alter our view of the universe and our place in it. This book is a must-read for anyone who has ever dreamed of finding other planets like ours—and perhaps even life like ours—in the cosmos.

The Search for Our Cosmic Ancestry

The Search for Our Cosmic Ancestry PDF Author: Chandra Wickramasinghe
Publisher: World Scientific
ISBN: 9814616990
Category : Science
Languages : en
Pages : 216

Book Description
The idea that life is a cosmic, rather than a purely terrestrial phenomenon, has progressed from scientific heresy to mainstream science within the short timespan of a few decades. The theory of cometary panspermia developed by Fred Hoyle and the present author in the 1970's has been vindicated by a spate of new discoveries in astronomy and biology, and also with startling new evidence of microbial fossils in meteorites and micrometeorites. The recent Kepler Telescope searches for exoplanets have indicated the presence of over 100 billion habitable planets separated by only a few light years, thus making panspermia and the transfer of microbial life between such planets an inevitable fact. The book presents a comprehensive and up-to-date account of the Hoyle–Wickramasinghe theory of cometary panspermia in a manner accessible to a wide general readership. Contents:The Genesis of PanspermiaThe Primordial Soup and EvolutionCosmological ContextFrom Dust to LifeCometsCosmic Viruses in Our GenesEvidence from EpidemicsMicroorganisms Entering the EarthPlanets of Life in the Solar SystemSearch for ExoplanetsSearch for Extraterrestrial IntelligenceMeteorite CluesComet Impacts and CivilisationThe Mystery of the Red Rain Readership: General public. Key Features:The recent estimate of some 140 billion habitable planets around red dwarf stars in the galaxy makes panspermia inevitable, so a reassessment of panspermia theories is timelyThe book is written by one of the foremost pioneers of the theory of cometary panspermia and is thus of interest to scientists across many fields, as well as to historians of scienceThe intended readership of the book ranges from science buffs to the general public with a general interest in scienceKeywords:Panspermia;Astrobiology;Comets;Origin of Life;Extraterrestrial LifeReviews: “The author is today's foremost expert on panspermia, having inherited that mantle from the iconic astronomer of the 20th century Sir Fred Hoyle who, with Wickramasinghe as his pupil, strongly re-introduced the subject in the early 1970's. He makes a compelling case for panspermia conveying a cosmic imperative for biology.” Gilbert V Levin Principal Investigator of NASA's Mars Viking Mission of 1976 Discoverer of evidence for Microbial Life on Mars Arizona State University “The book is accessible to those interested in an appreciation of a central question that spans all ages, and scientists and science students, who are seeking coverage of this pioneering subject matter. The historical approach to the subject will be appreciated by readers. The book will take you on an intellectual trek and can transform how you think about humans and the universe. Hopefully it will encourage the next generation of scholars to continue seeking an understanding of the origin of life, one of the most profound challenges for humanity.” Professor J T Trevors University of Guelph, Canada

A New Look at the Prophecies of Daniel

A New Look at the Prophecies of Daniel PDF Author: Steven Ortlepp
Publisher: Lulu.com
ISBN: 1445263270
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 290

Book Description
Daniel's Prophecies: The Next Level. Popular singer-songwriter, James Blunt, encourages: "You've got to ask yourself the question: 'Where are you now?'" This one can ask of the human race as a whole. Following a completely different exegetical approach to the prophecies of Daniel, this author attempts to answer this very question. A definition of prophecy is "history written in advance". However, an angel ordered Daniel to seal the book until the end time. Many will rove about and the true knowledge will become abundant. He added that no wicked one will understand, but that the ones having insight, will understand (cf. Dan. 12:4, 9, 10). Wicked ones have no future in God's "new earth", so one ignores these prophecies at your peril (cf. Ps. 37:38; Prov. 2:21, 22; 2 Pet. 3:13). This monograph concentrates on Dan. 11:40-45. The new edition includes a Concise Messianic Timeline and a Quick Reference Guide for quick and easy reference.
