Meditation on the Nature of Mind

Meditation on the Nature of Mind PDF Author: Dalai Lama
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 0861716299
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 232

Book Description
"We all have the same human mind - each and every one of us has the same potential. Our surroundings and so forth are important, but the nature of mind itself is more important... To live a happy and joyful life, we must take care of our minds." - His Holiness the Dalai Lama At the heart of this book is The Wish-Fulfilling Jewel of the Oral Tradition, an accessible and nonsectarian treatise on penetrating the nature of mind by Khonton Peljor Lhundrub, a teacher of the Fifth Dalai Lama. His Holiness the Fourteenth Dalai Lama's broad-ranging overview of this work insightfully distills some of the most central themes of Buddhism: why the mind is so essential to the tradition, what distinguishes the levels of consciousness, and how different schools of Tibetan Buddhism elaborate those distinctions. Profound and erudite, it brings the reader closer to a fresh and direct experience of Buddhism's central truths. Along with his lucid translations, Jose Cabezon provides an introduction to the root text and presentations of the life and works of Khonton Rinpoche, all richly annotated.

An Introduction to Buddhism and Tantric Meditation

An Introduction to Buddhism and Tantric Meditation PDF Author: His Holiness the XIVth Dalai Lama
Publisher: Library of Tibetan Works and Archives
ISBN: 9380359543
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 62

Book Description
The teachings of the Buddha can be summarised as dealing with conduct and view. Conduct refers to the way we should behave, which is essentially to be non-violence. The Buddha counseled us to help each other if we can, and if we cannot at least to avoid doing one another harm. View refers to the way we understand how things exist. The Buddha explained that nothing exists of its own accord in isolation. Everything exists in dependence on something else, the result of a variety of causes and conditions. His Holiness was requested to compose A Tantric Meditation to give an opportunity to people seriously interested in finding out about the practice of tantra the opportunity to do so without the necessity of receiving prior empowerment. Consequently, it includes a simple process of visualization, recitation of the traditional seven branch rite, recitation of mantras and dissolution of the visualised meditational deities into emptiness. If it is performed with faith, this meditation can be a source of great mental purification and merit but whether you do so or not is entirely up to the individual. If the teachings of the Buddha are to help us make spiritual progress it is also most important that we familiarise ourselves with them regularly, either by listening to them or by reading.

Creation and Completion

Creation and Completion PDF Author: Jamgon Kongtrul
Publisher: Simon and Schuster
ISBN: 0861718208
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 208

Book Description
Creation and Completion represents some of the most profound teachings of Jamgon Kongtrul (1813-99), one of the true spiritual and literary giants of Tibetan history. Though brief, it offers a lifetime of advice for all who wish to engage in-and deepen-the practice of tantric Buddhist meditation. The original text, beautifully translated and introduced by Sara Harding, is further brought to life by an in-depth commentary by the contemporary master Thrangu Rinpoche. Key Tibetan Buddhist fundamentals are quickly made clear, so that the reader may confidently enter into tantra's oft-misunderstood "creation" and "completion" stages. In the creation stage, practitioners visualize themselves in the form of buddhas and other enlightened beings in order to break down their ordinary concepts of themselves and the world around them. This meditation practice prepares the mind for engaging in the completion stage, where one has a direct encounter with the ultimate nature of mind and reality.

The texts within this volume—Ladder to Akaniṣṭha, Clarifying the Difficult Points in the Development Stage, The Four Stakes That Bind the Life-Force, and Husks of Unity—are among the most widely studied commentaries on this topic and have formed the basis for spiritual study and practice for centuries. Secret of the Vajra World

Secret of the Vajra World PDF Author: Reginald A. Ray
Publisher: Shambhala Publications
ISBN: 157062917X
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 545

Book Description
An entrée into the world of Tantric Buddhism—a unique collection of texts, concepts, and meditation practices presented by Tibetan masters teaching in the West The “Vajra World” (vajradhatu in Sanskrit) is a realm of indestructibility, the level of reality beyond all thought and imagination, all impermanence and change, which a fully realized person knows and inhabits. Used metaphorically, “Vajra World” refers to the traditional culture of Tibet and the unique spirituality that is its secret strength. Secret of the Vajra World is the companion volume to the author’s earlier book, Indestructible Truth: The Living Spirituality of Tibetan Buddhism. While that book focuses on the history, cosmology, philosophy, and practice of the more public, exoteric side of Tibetan Buddhism, this work treats its more hidden and esoteric aspects as they take shape in Vajrayana. Together, the two volumes provide a broad introduction to the major traditions of Tibetan Buddhism. Topics include: • The tantric view of human nature and the external world • The special role of the guru, or tantric mentor • The preliminary practices that prepare the student for full initiation • The major dimensions of Vajrayana practice, including visualizations, liturgies, and inner yogas • The tradition of the tulku, or incarnate lama • The lore surrounding the death of ordinary people and of saints • The practice of solitary retreat, the epitome of traditional Tibetan Buddhism

Meditation Differently, Phenomenological-psychological Aspects of Tibetan Buddhist (Mahāmudrā and Snying-thig) Practices from Original Tibetan Sources

Meditation Differently, Phenomenological-psychological Aspects of Tibetan Buddhist (Mahāmudrā and Snying-thig) Practices from Original Tibetan Sources PDF Author: Herbert V. Guenther
Publisher: Motilal Banarsidass Publishe
ISBN: 9788120808706
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 230

Book Description
Despite the interest in meditation, few works have studied what meditation means within the original traditions. Meditation Differently presents a translation of an important Tibetan work which contrasts and compares two central traditions of Buddhist meditative practice-the Mahamudra and the rDzogs-chen, particularly the sNying-thing version. This translation is supplemented by a detailed commentary based on original Tibetan sources by Dr. Guenther, an eminent scholar of Buddhism and modern thought. This critical commentary is a hermeneutical and phenomenological study of the key ideas in the understanding of being and experience, utilizing developments in modern thinking to bring out the nuances of Buddhist thinking.
