Book Description
Excerpt from Montgomeryshire Worthies Huw Arwystli was a poor despised cripple, and sometimes for want of lodging was accustomed to turn aside into the church at Llandinam, in Montgomeryshire, to sleep when he came that way on his travels. And it chanced that he came that way one May eve and slept there that night, and while he was in deep slumber he in his sleep saw one coming to him and putting something into his head, and, next morning when he awoke, it happened that a maiden came by who had been gathering may and bearing an armful of may, and She said to those who were with her in passing by the u indow under which Huw was lying these words, Not one of you will give any may to this cripple I will give him some, ' and She tossed to him through the window a branch of fresh gathered may, and he thanked her in verse, who had never before composed or known how to compose a Single stanza; and the song that he sang to her follows thus in this Englyn. And from this time he began to compose poetry, and made many masterly odes, and was in favom'with the gentry of Wales during the rest of his life, and what he saw entering his head was the poetic faculty which God gave him, and which excelled any that existed in the age in which he lived. Life of James Montgomery (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Mrs. Helen C. Knight
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781331377276
Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 438

Book Description
Excerpt from Life of James Montgomery We introduce to our readers James Montgomery. His English biographers, Mr. John Holland and Rev. James Everett, with affectionate assiduity have issued his life in seven volumes. Precious as the most insignificant memorials of him must be to personal friends, and interesting as are all the links which bind a man to his own country, a great portion of this ample detail possesses little, if any interest, to an American public. It therefore has been our work to sift out from this the true wheat of his life, and mould it anew. With none of the classic richness of Rogers, the weird originality of Coleridge, the introspective sweetness of Wordsworth, or the fascinating romance of Scott, there is a moral earnestness, an unaffected grace, a purity of diction, which penetrate the heart and place his poetry among the permanent literature of England. The Christian element of his hymns gave them wings. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Thirteen Worthies (Classic Reprint)

Thirteen Worthies (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Llewelyn Powys
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780365410324
Category : Literary Collections
Languages : en

Book Description
Excerpt from Thirteen Worthies Page 7easily to our lips when we think of the worthies - eight or ten of them, at least - of whom Mr. Powys writes in these engaging essays. We need a word which, like a Chinese ideogram, conveys a complex mental picture and touches in a flash the springs of the five senses, a word that suggests, among other things, the ruddy skins, slightly shrivelled, the toughness and viscosity, the pungent flavour of rare country apples that have been laid away for the winter. I am the freer to use this figure because Mr. Powys' worthies are all so redolent of the vegetable kingdom their veins seem to flow as much with the sap of trees as with the blood of animals and (on occasion) the ichor of angels. How firmly planted they appear to be in the fat soil of those old-world meadows and river bottoms of which their writings, so sweet and so bitter, might almost be taken for a direct expression. Vari ous as were the parts they played inlife and far as some of them wan dered in the world, their poetry and their wisdom, as Mr. Powys shows us, were fruits of the long infancy, the profound, productive inertia of that abundant rural life of old times. Book Description
Excerpt from The Adventurers: A Tale of Treasure Trove Montgomery stood, his red face somewhat vacant and grinning broadly, while his sallow-faced victim, who had got upon his feet, gesticulated and stuttered under his nose with a Show of passion that was not quite English. And at this moment, when it seemed as if some retaliation was to be expected and a fracas precipitated, an impulse took me, and I myself inter vened. I think, sir, said I, addressing Montgomery, you will admit that you have used this worthy gentleman very ill; and if I were you, sir, with your youth and spirit at my back, I would ask his pardon at once. On that he stared at me for some seconds, and then, plumping the empty glass on the table, he broke into a Sheepish laugh. All right, he said; very sorry. I beg his pardon, and muttering some indistinct apologies, he resumed his seat, Sitting somewhat silent for a good time after wards.
