Children as Climate Citizens

Children as Climate Citizens PDF Author: Kata Dozsa
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000928721
Category : Law
Languages : en
Pages : 170

Book Description
This book provides a socio-legal analysis of the public participation of children in climate change matters, whilst developing a range of tools through which their participation can be increased. Climate change affects young people in many ways: causing severe threats to child survival, health and wellbeing, food security and nutrition, and access to education. But this book maintains that children and youth are not to be identified solely with their vulnerability to climate change. They are also key stakeholders in the sustainable implementation of long-term climate change policies, and their inclusion in decision-making processes is a measure of intergenerational equity. Children’s rights law is vague about the right to public participation or the environmental rights of children as such. In response, this book examines the often-informal network of pathways through which the public participation of children takes place: from high level conferences and governance structures to grassroots youth movements and climate change litigation. Exploring the difficulties, but also the opportunities and aspirations of children as citizens challenging the current climate change regime, the book proposes legal and policy tools for children’s participation in global climate change governance, as it outlines a concept of children’s climate citizenship. This book will appeal to scholars in the areas of sociolegal studies, environmental and climate change law, children’s rights and social movements, as well as policy makers and young people with interests in climate activism.

And Then There's This

And Then There's This PDF Author: Bill Wasik
Publisher: Penguin
ISBN: 110105770X
Category : Social Science
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
Breaking news, fresh gossip, tiny scandals, trumped-up crises-every day we are distracted by a culture that rings our doorbell and runs away. Stories spread wildly and die out in mere days, to be replaced by still more stories with ever shorter life spans. Through the Internet the news cycle has been set spinning even faster now that all of us can join the fray: anyone on a computer can spread a story almost as easily as The New York Times, CNN, or People. As media amateurs grow their audience, they learn to think like the pros, using the abundant data that the Internet offers-hit counters, most e-mailed lists, YouTube views, download tallies-to hone their own experiments in viral blowup. And Then There's This is Bill Wasik's journey along the unexplored frontier of the twenty-first century's rambunctious new-media culture. He covers this world in part as a journalist, following "buzz bands" as they rise and fall in the online music scene, visiting with viral marketers and political trendsetters and online provocateurs. But he also wades in as a participant, conducting his own hilarious experiments: an e-mail fad (which turned into the worldwide "flash mob" sensation), a viral website in a month-long competition, a fake blog that attempts to create "antibuzz," and more. He doesn't always get the results he expected, but he tries to make sense of his data by surveying what real social science experiments have taught us about the effects of distraction, stimulation, and crowd behavior on the human mind. Part report, part memoir, part manifesto, part deconstruction of a decade, And Then There's This captures better than any other book the way technology is changing our culture.

Arab Women's Activism and Socio-Political Transformation

Arab Women's Activism and Socio-Political Transformation PDF Author: Sahar Khamis
Publisher: Springer
ISBN: 3319607359
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 258

Book Description
This book illustrates how Arab women have been engaging in three ongoing, parallel struggles, before, during, and after the Arab Spring, on three levels, namely: the political struggle to pave the road for democracy, freedom, and reform; the social struggle to achieve gender equality and fight all forms of injustice and discrimination against women; and the legal struggle to chart new laws which can safeguard both the political and the social gains. The contributors argue that while the political upheavals were oftentimes more prevalent and visible, they should not overshadow the parallel social and legal revolutions which are equally important, due to their long-term impacts on the region. The chapters shed light on the intersections, overlaps and divergences between these simultaneous, continuous gendered struggles and unpacks their complexities and multiple implications, locally, regionally, and internationally, across different countries and through different phases.

Digital Activism and the Global Middle Class

Digital Activism and the Global Middle Class PDF Author: Lukas Schlogl
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1000603024
Category : Language Arts & Disciplines
Languages : en
Pages : 207

Book Description
This book examines the causes of a growing wave of digital activism across developing countries, arguing that it is driven by social change, rather than technological advancement alone. Beginning with an investigation into the modernization of ‘middle-income countries’ and its ramifications for political culture, the book examines large-scale social media protest during political controversies in Indonesia. The book connects empirical evidence to classic theories of value change and political behaviour. It departs from a narrow ‘digital divide’ framing whereby Internet access produces Internet activism. It introduces the concepts of ‘digital self-expression’ and of ‘middle-class struggles’ to capture the value-stratified nature of political engagement in the online sphere. Drawing on a blend of ‘big-data’ text analyses, representative opinion research, and socioeconomic household analyses, a rich picture of the determinants of digital activism emerges. This truly cross-disciplinary book will appeal particularly to students and scholars in Political Science, Sociology, International Development, and Communication, but also to anyone eager to learn about political activism, social transformation, and new media from a global perspective.
