Book Description
Excerpt from Syntax of the French Verb In using the book in class, some teachers will desire to assign for study only the most important material, reserving the remainder for reading and reference. To facilitate this, two sizes of type are employed. Attention is directed to the fact that this is the sole method used to indicate the importance of the material. The paragraphs introduced by letters are to be considered as equal in importance to those intro duced by numbers, unless they are set in the smaller size of type. The French Verb Simplified (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: Julius Magath

Book Description
Excerpt from The French Verb Simplified Neither the French verb nor the verb of any language can be mastered without effort or in a very short space of time, and all promises to teach the verb at a glance are delusive. This treatise, as implied by its name, is an attempt to simplify a very important part of the French Grammar. It is not merely a theoretical exposition of the French verb, but is the result of years of practical teaching in the school room. It is published at the repeated requests of many of my former students of Emory College, and, it is hoped that it may prove useful to others also. It is not intended to take the place of a grammar, and, to encourage the use of the dictionary, the French forms are given without their English equivalents. The blank pages are intended for notes on the idiomatic uses of the different verbs. The blank index, if properly filled out, will make the notes more accessible. A New French Grammar

Book Description
Excerpt from A New French Grammar: Accidence and Essentials of Syntax As regards irregular verbs, in some Grammars they are grouped according to their chief irregularities, in others simply given in alphabetical order. I have tried to combine the ad vantages oi both plans by first pointing out the deviations of anomalous verbs from the rules of tense-formation and personal inflections 232 and the peculiarities of the primitive tenses themselves 303 and afterwards placing the verbs of each conjugation alphabetically, so as to facilitate references. The French Verb

The French Verb PDF Author: C. F. Martin
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780267866939
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 376

Book Description
Excerpt from The French Verb: Its Conjugation and Idiomatic Use The object of this work is to show the complete conjugations of all French verbs and to illustrate their idiomatic use. The idea of the author is that when a student learns to conjugate a verb, he should also learn how to use it. It is as necessary to know what preposition, if any, follows a verb before an infinitive as it is to know the gender Of a, noun. It is also necessary to know how to form a sentence with the verb. The arrangement of the book is based on the system used at the United States Military Academy, where the object is to impart a thorough working knowledge of the French language in the most practical way and in the shortest time possible. The verb is to a language what the steel frame is to a building. Hence at the Military Academy the Verb Book is a companion to the Grammar and the Reader. Lessons in French Syntax and Composition (Classic Reprint)

Lessons in French Syntax and Composition (Classic Reprint) PDF Author: W. U. Vreeland

Book Description
Excerpt from Lessons in French Syntax and Composition The purpose of these Lessons is to state as briefly and as clearly as possible the most important rules of French syntax, and to offer a sufficient quantity of material for translation from English into French to give the student a thorough drill in applying these rules. A knowl edge of the forms and of the simplest rules is presupposed. By having the syntax brief and the exercises placed directly after the part of the syntax under discussion, no time or patience need be lost in looking up references to grammars, nor will the student be con fused by a multiplicity of rules, many of which, while necessary in a complete grammar, would serve only to bewilder the mind of the be ginner. To facilitate references the syntax has been paragraphed continuously. It has been found best not to pay any attention to the recent changes now tolerated in French orthography and syntax. Exercises in French Syntax and Composition

Exercises in French Syntax and Composition PDF Author: Jeanne Marie Bouvet
Publisher: Forgotten Books
ISBN: 9780483084759
Category : Foreign Language Study
Languages : en
Pages : 212

Book Description
Excerpt from Exercises in French Syntax and Composition: With Notes and Vocabulary Part II. Consists of interesting selections for connected trans lation, taken from French sources and relating to French topics, chiefly historical, biographical, and literary. The style of these selections, however, is neither stiff nor formal, as is too apt to be the case with composition work on these subjects. My aim has'not been to impose upon the pupil a polish and an elegance Of expression which would be unnatural to him if he were using his own tongue, but to furnish him with ordinary, though correct and idiomatic, English, so constructed that, with the aids given, it might readily be turned into good French. The size and character of the vocabulary will show that quite a variety of styles has been exemplified. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description
Excerpt from Syntax of the French Verb The present work, while by no means a complete treatment of the syntax of the French verb, is intended to be sufficiently comprehensive to serve students of French as a reference book. At the same time, an effort has been made to arrange the material in such a way that it can be used to advantage in class, especially in connection with exercises in French composition. The aim of the book is to record only contemporary French usage; that is, to include only such statements as can be verified for good written or spoken French of the last fifty years. Any one familiar with grammatical treatises will know how rarely such a purpose is attained, and it is to be feared that, in spite of the care exercised, archaic constructions may have slipped into the treatment. Since the book should serve the double purpose of an explanation of literary construction and of an aid in using colloquial French, some material of both classes is included; but, for the most important cases of deviation in the two styles, there exists the intention of indicating to which style a given statement applies. When practicable, illustrative sentences have been chosen which are good in either style. No effort has been made to limit the illustrative examples to citations from French authors. The governing principle has been to make the sentence structure and the vocabulary as simple as possible, and to court rather than to taboo repetition; the aim being to distract the student's attention as little as possible from the principle illustrated. Where practicable, this is further sought for by spacing the letters of the French word or phrase that illustrates the rule. To increase the practical utility of the book, material has sometimes been included that, strictly speaking, is not syntactical; and, for the same reason, the classification of material is not always rigorously accurate; for example, participial forms of the verb with purely adjectival functions are treated here instead of being relegated to a work on the adjective.
