Book Description
Diploma Thesis from the year 2000 in the subject Business economics - Personnel and Organisation, grade: 1,0, University of Amsterdam (Unbekannt), language: English, abstract: Inhaltsangabe: Abstract: You are the CEO of a company with 50 employees. In order to keep your deadlines and ensure the satisfaction of your customers that you depend upon, you need every worker every working day. You are located in a high rise in the downtown area of a metropolitan city, most of your employees live in the suburban quarters and because of lack of reasonably priced parking space commute by public transport. Imagine a public transport strike. No busses, no trains, no underground. The strike lasts five days. Traffic jams everywhere and no parking space. Will your employees show up? Chances are, they will not get to work on time, if they get there at all. How many customers will be dissatisfied with your service? How many employees do you have to pay although they did not do anything? How many workable hours will be lost? What costs do you have to pay although no income was generated? If your employees were teleworking, things would have been different. The "telework" concept is based on computers interconnected through phone lines and the idea of moving information instead of people can lead to a number of direct and indirect improvements for the organization and management of the workplace and its operations. The reduction of traffic, increased productivity, greater flexibility in balancing work and family demands and improved management of office space are well known benefits of teleworking from home or a telecenter. Although telework can contribute immensely to handling business interruptions through crises or disasters, this area is little explored. California is a place very prone to disasters. Located on the St. Andreas fault, the area experienced recently two major earthquakes and geologists expect another large earthquake within the next 30 years. Apart from natural disas

Book Description
"When historic snowstorms forced lengthy closings of federal offices in the National Capital Region in 2010, thousands of employees continued to work from their homes, making clear the potential of telework in mitigating the effects of emergencies. GAO was asked to (1) describe the guidance lead agencies have issued pertaining to the use of telework during emergencies; (2) describe Office of Personnel Management (OPM) and other assessments related to agencies' incorporation of telework into emergency or continuity planning, and the extent to which the lead agencies have provided definitions and practices to support agency planning; and (3) assess the extent to which OPM and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) coordinated with other agencies on recent guidance documents. To address these objectives, GAO reviewed relevant statutes, regulations, guidance documents, and OPM's telework survey methodology, and interviewed key officials of agencies providing telework and telework-related emergency guidance. GAO recommends that OPM consult with other lead agencies to develop a definition and cohesive set of practices for incorporating telework into emergency and continuity planning; improve its related data collection; and establish an interagency coordination"

Category : Civil service

Book Description
President Obama, Congress, and the United States Office of Personnel Management have all encouraged Federal agencies to expand their use of telework to ensure continuity of operations; find targeted productivity improvements and reduce overhead, real estate, environmental, and transit costs; and improve employees' ability to manage their work and life obligations. Telework's benefits are realised by Federal agencies only to the extent that employees are permitted to actively participate in these programs. This book summarises the provisions of P.L. 111-292 and identifies several possible issues for congressional oversight of telework.

Languages : en
Pages : 72

Book Description
To ensure that essential government services are available in emergencies, federal agencies are required to develop continuity of operations (COOP) plans. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), is responsible for overseeing and assessing the status of COOP capabilities of federal executive branch agencies. It has developed guidance stating that agency COOP plans must designate alternate facilities and prepare personnel for unannounced relocation to these facilities. The guidance also states that agencies should consider the use of telework in their continuity plans. GAO was asked to follow up on its previous work on COOP planning and determine, among other things, to what extent (1) 6 selected agencies prepared their alternate facilities and (2) 23 major agencies made preparations necessary to effectively use telework in emergency situations.
