Books and Libraries in Early England

Books and Libraries in Early England PDF Author: Helmut Gneuss
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1040246699
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 268

Book Description
The essays in this second volume from Helmut Gneuss are devoted to the study of books, their readers, and libraries in medieval England, especially in the Anglo-Saxon period. The selection opens with a survey of the history of the medieval English library, followed by detailed studies of Anglo-Saxon book production. These also examine its relation in the 9th century to King Alfred's plan for educational reform, and to the intellectual history of the 10th century. Two articles deal with liturgical books, and include the standard classified list of liturgical manuscripts. To end, there is an analysis of the earliest modern catalogue of books with Old English texts, that by George Hickes, and an investigation of the history of the Latin hymnal in Britain.

The Reformation of Cathedrals

The Reformation of Cathedrals PDF Author: Stanford E. Lehmberg
Publisher: Princeton University Press
ISBN: 1400859808
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 336

Book Description
Stanford Lehmberg, a noted authority on the Tudor period, examines the impact of the Reformation on the cathedrals of England and Wales. Based largely on manuscript materials from the cathedral archives themselves, this book is the first attempt to draw together information for all twenty-nine of the cathedrals that existed in the Tudor period. The author scrutinizes the major changes that took place during this era in the institutional structure, personnel, endowments, liturgy, and music of the cathedral and shows how the cathedrals, unlike the monasteries that were dissolved by Henry VIII, succeeded in adapting successfully to the Reformation. Forty-two illustrations depict sixteenth-century changes in cathedral buildings. Narrative chapters trace the changes that occurred during the reigns of Henry VIII, Edward VI, "Bloody" Mary, and Elizabeth I. Analytical sections are devoted to cathedral finance and cathedral music. The changing lives of cathedral musicians are described in some detail, and even greater attention is paid to the cathedral clergy, whose living conditions changed markedly when they were allowed to marry. Using a variety of sources, including such physical remains as tombs and monuments, the concluding chapter discusses the role of cathedrals in English society. Originally published in 1989. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Tudor Historical Thought

Tudor Historical Thought PDF Author: F. J. Levy
Publisher: University of Toronto Press
ISBN: 0802037755
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 324

Book Description
Tudor Historical Thought is a revealing account of vital changes in intellectual orientation. Originally published in 1967, F.J. Levy's seminal work explores the factors ? humanism, theology, antiquarianism, Machiavellianism ? that brought about the changes in historical thinking from the time of Caxton to that of Bacon, Raleigh, and Camden. Earlier, the study of the past was justified on utilitarian grounds, and the purpose of history writing was didactic. At the beginning of the sixteenth century, chroniclers exemplified the workings of Providence and taught personal morality; a hundred years later, however, the idea of teaching practical statecraft had been introduced. The Italian humanists emphasized the political aspects of man, and made the active citizen rather than the cloistered monk their ideal. That citizen needed guidance, and it was the duty of the historian to supply it. Questions of politics, which had been important for nearly half a century, suddenly were placed at the centre, and with that a new kind of history writing appeared in England. An essential text in Renaissance historiography, Tudor Historical Thought will now be available to a new generation of scholars.

Medieval Manuscripts in Post-Medieval England

Medieval Manuscripts in Post-Medieval England PDF Author: Andrew G. Watson
Publisher: Taylor & Francis
ISBN: 1000946657
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 396

Book Description
Two themes uniting the essays in this collection are the provenance and history of medieval manuscripts during the Middle Ages, and the fates that befell them in England in the period after the invention of printing and the 16th-century dissolution of the religious houses and visitations of the universities. The section 'Libraries and collectors' includes papers on seven major English collectors of the 16th and 17th centuries, and the section 'Manuscripts' concerns the fates of five manuscripts or groups of manuscripts from England, Belgium and Italy. Of the other chapters one is concerned with the post-medieval history of the library of All Souls College, Oxford, and another with the provenance of hundreds of manuscripts in the Harleian collection in the British Library. For this volume Andrew Watson has provided extensive additional notes and indexes.
