Conjuring Asia

Conjuring Asia PDF Author: Chris Goto-Jones
Publisher: Cambridge University Press
ISBN: 1316720624
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 339

Book Description
The promise of magic has always commanded the human imagination, but the story of industrial modernity is usually seen as a process of disenchantment. Drawing on the writings and performances of the so-called 'Golden Age Magicians' from the turn of the twentieth century, Chris Goto-Jones unveils the ways in which European and North American encounters with (and representations of) Asia - the fabled Mystic East - worked to re-enchant experiences of the modern world. Beginning with a reconceptualization of the meaning of 'modern magic' itself - moving beyond conventional categories of 'real' and 'fake' magic - Goto-Jones' acclaimed book guides us on a magical mystery tour around India, China, and Japan, showing us levitations and decapitations, magic duels and bullet catches, goldfish bowls and paper butterflies. In the end, this mesmerizing book reveals Orientalism as a kind of magic in itself, casting a spell over Western culture that leaves it transformed, even today.

Book Description
"Modern Magic" is a treatise in book form, detailing the apparatus, methods and tricks used by the magicians and conjurors. It was the first book in the English language to really explain how to perform magical feats. The treatise contains advice on the appearance, the dress and the staging of a magician. It then goes on to describe many tricks with playing cards, coins, watches, rings, handkerchiefs, dominoes, dice, cups, balls and hats, and concludes with a long chapter of miscellaneous tricks, including magic with strings, gloves, eggs, rice and some utility devices. The penultimate chapter describes large stage illusions, and the final chapter contains advice on routining a magic show, as well as more advice on staging.

Book Description
From the Author's INTRODUCTION: THE value of suggestion is nowhere so clearly demonstrated as in the Magic Art, and I have yet to see the book devoted to this subject that has not imparted at least a few good ideas well worth retaining. I therefore present this little series of original experiments to the lovers of Magic, not so much for its value as a collection of up-to-date tricks, separate and distinct from each other, but rather as a series of useful hints and ideas, from which I trust both the amateur and professional may derive much food for thought. I have not considered it necessary, in a book of this size, to devote any space to the definition of terms and phrases commonly used in conjuring circles, for the tricks herein described would be of little practical use to one unfamiliar with the rudiments of Magic, or current literature on the subject, while to the advanced conjurer such information would only be superfluous. In the near future I hope to publish a larger book devoted exclusively to the beginner — a sort of A B C of Magic, I might say, brought right up to date, in which I shall endeavor to confer upon the neophyte the mysteries of modern Magic in a clear, concise manner, and lead him step by step to the higher class of conjuring.
