Evelyn recorded the visit: 'I went to see Dr. Dickinson the famous chemist. We had a long conversation about the philosopher's elixir, which he believed attainable and had seen projection himself by one who went under the name of Mundanus, who sometimes came among the adepts, but was unknown as to his country or abode; of this the doctor has written a treatise in Latin, full of very astonishing relations.'

Quintessence

Quintessence PDF Author: Willard Van Orman Quine
Publisher: Harvard University Press
ISBN: 0674266528
Category : Philosophy
Languages : en
Pages : 431

Book Description
Through the first half of the twentieth century, analytic philosophy was dominated by Russell, Wittgenstein, and Carnap. Influenced by Russell and especially by Carnap, another towering figure, Willard Van Orman Quine (1908–2000) emerged as the most important proponent of analytic philosophy during the second half of the century. Yet with twenty-three books and countless articles to his credit—including, most famously, Word and Object and "Two Dogmas of Empiricism"—Quine remained a philosopher's philosopher, largely unknown to the general public. Quintessence for the first time collects Quine's classic essays (such as "Two Dogmas" and "On What There Is") in one volume—and thus offers readers a much-needed introduction to his general philosophy. Divided into six parts, the thirty-five selections take up analyticity and reductionism; the indeterminacy of translation of theoretical sentences and the inscrutability of reference; ontology; naturalized epistemology; philosophy of mind; and extensionalism. Representative of Quine at his best, these readings are fundamental not only to an appreciation of the philosopher and his work, but also to an understanding of the philosophical tradition that he so materially advanced.

Pages : 177

Book Description
How can we tell if our judgment is sound? Will the abandoned choices, the lost options, the lives we never led, haunt us like spectral reproaches? Are we living in a perfect world? Why not? What went so badly wrong? What makes us choose disastrously en masse? Whatever happened to the so-called Wisdom of Crowds? If they're so smart, why is the world so dumb? Is it true, as the Illuminati assert, that the West lost an entire millennium because of Christianity? Was it this strange religion that sabotaged our progress to our own Eden? What might the world have looked like if instead of the rule of the Catholic Church, paganism had prevailed? This is the story of an alternative history of the West, one where Christianity never happened. The tale of this bright world that never was begins with the pre-Socratic philosophers of ancient Greece, some of the greatest, boldest and most imaginative thinkers of all time. This is the tale of the infinitely mysterious Quintessence.

The Quintessence of Nietzsche

The Quintessence of Nietzsche PDF Author: John McFarland Kennedy

Book Description

Not illustrated. 1910 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER V THE RELATIONSHIP OF SCHOPENHAUER'S PHILOSOPHY TO A GERMAN CULTURE--PHILOSOPHY IN THE TRAGIC AGE OF GREECE--ON TRUTH AND LYING IN AN AMORAL SENSE--THOUGHTS OUT OF SEASON. THE Relationship of Schopenhauer's Philosophy to a German Culture is a fragment composed in the autumn and winter of 1872. It is remarkable only as containing the germs of a few thoughts afterwards expanded and dealt with more fully in Schopenhauer as Educator. The Philosophy in the Tragic Age of Greece was sketched out in 1873 and then laid aside. Mrs. Foerster-Nietzsche tells us f that her brother did not care to retouch his earlier works, more especially when, as in the case of the present fragment, his knowledge of the subject had considerably increased when he again took up the MS. in 1879 to prepare it for the press. It did not, however, appear during his lifetime. Of the three essays, the Philosophy in the Tragic Age of Greece is undoubtedly the most important. Although only some thirty thousand words long, it gives an illuminating history of early Greek philosophy. (Nietzsche's original plan is indicated by a title he had in mind: The AntePlatonic Philosophy, with the Interpretation of Select Fragments.) The object of the essay is indicated in the words which conclude his first preface, written in 1874: "My task is to bring that to light which we must always love and honour, and which no later or more extensive knowledge will ever be able to take away from us: the great man." To find other works of equally deep learning, breadth of imagination, and felicity of style, we must turn to Dr. Gilbert Murray. The Truth and Lying was highly prized by Nietzsche himself, and he intended to expand it later into an essay uniform with those forming the Thoughts out...

Cracking the Philosophers' Stone

Cracking the Philosophers' Stone PDF Author: J. Erik LaPort
Publisher: Quintessence Classical Alchemy
ISBN: 9780990619802
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 658

Book Description
Cracking the Philosophers' Stone is a combination of historical commentary with reproducible chemistry that thoroughly analyses one of the most respected and mysterious chemical reactions in the history of science and technology. This book guides the reader through the origins and evolution of the archetypal recipe for the Philosophers' Stone of early Alexandrian alchemy. LaPort and Gabrielsson also provide details for various chemical reproductions based on the authors' interpretation and hypotheses of ancient chemistry preserved in encrypted form in alchemical texts. Because of the human stories and historical backdrop, every layperson will find something of value to expand their understanding of the ancient world. Even scientists and specifically chemists will be fascinated with the reproducible chemical experiments presented in this ground-breaking work. The book is actually three books in one: 1) an introduction to alchemy, 2) a detailed history of alchemy's origins and evolution, and 3) a technical reference for actual reproducibility of alchemy's most sought-after prize - the Philosophers' Stone. Conclusions are contextually counter-balanced by laboratory experimentation, traditional alchemical texts and original interpretations.
