Catholic Doctrine As Defined by the Council of Trent

Catholic Doctrine As Defined by the Council of Trent PDF Author: A. Nampon

ISBN: 9781495403873

Book Description
This work contains the decrees of Trent, which are expanded by the author to explain the Catholic Faith. The reunion of all Christians into one fold under one shepherd has been the desire of all sincere Christians from the time of the first schisms in the Church. This book converted a man, who wrote the preface. This was published shortly before the First Vatican Council, which also sought to bring about the reunion of all Christians. In translating the Council of Trent, I have translated an exposition of t.he Catholic Faith, indisputanly more perfect than that of Bossuet, and of which the author is the Church itself, assisted by the Holy Ghost. It is impossible for these definitions, impressed with the seal of divine authority and truth, to become more widely known, without producing the salutary effects which the Fathers of Trent had in view: that is to say, confirming Catholics ill the faith and dissipat.ing the prejudices, doubts and errors of a great number of those who differ from us. That the beauty of our rites may be appreciated, I have presented what is better than the fictions of the most beautiful poetry, some pages faithfully translated from the Ritual and Pontifical. I have added the profession of faith of Pius IV., with the notes of tho theological faculty of Louvain, which has distinguished itself ill its contests against heresy. The anathemas directed by the Council against those who attack our dogmas could not have been included in this work, if I had not made some mention of the errors of those teachers. I have therefore rapidly traced their genealogy, a task made easy for me by the labors of Bellarmine, Bossuet, Moehler, Dollinger, and others. At the same time I have spoken as little as possible of them, because such an enumeration, which could never be complete, and must always be disagreeable, would have been useful out to a small number, and repugnant to most, and would have transformed into a polemical treatise an exposition which I wished especially to make clear, brief, and kindly. Composed of such elements, the work will, I hope, be of some use, first to Cathol1cs who wish to have a more than elementary knowledge of our doctrines, than to Protestants who are desirous of not protesting against the Council of Trent without being acquainted with the subject, and to those especially who wish to have done with this unhappy protesting.

Defence of the Seven Sacraments

Defence of the Seven Sacraments PDF Author: Henry VIII KIng of England
Publisher: Dalcassian Press
ISBN:
Category : Religion
Languages : en
Pages : 108

Book Description
The Defence of the Seven Sacraments (in Latin, Assertio Septem Sacramentorum) is a theological treatise from 1521, written by King Henry VIII of England. Henry started to write it in 1519 while he was reading Martin Luther's attack on indulgences. By June of that year, he had shown it to Thomas Wolsey, but it remained private until three years later, when the earlier manuscript became the first two chapters of the Assertio, the rest consisting of new material relating to Luther's De Captivitate Babylonica. It is believed that Thomas More was involved in the composition of the piece. Author J. J. Scarisbrick describes the work as "one of the most successful pieces of Catholic polemics produced by the first generation of anti-Protestant writers." It went through some twenty editions in the sixteenth century and, as early as 1522, had appeared in two different German translations. It was dedicated to Pope Leo X, who rewarded Henry with the title Fidei Defensor (Defender of the Faith) in October 1521 (a title revoked following the king's break with the Catholic Church in the 1530s, but re-awarded to his heir by the English Parliament).

Popes Against Modern Errors

Popes Against Modern Errors PDF Author: Tan Books

Book Description
In 1789, the French Revolution took place and launched a host of religious, political and social errors which the Popes for over 160 years afterwards wrote and legislated against. Yet most of these errors have spread and today have filtered down to the common man... with the result that most people now take for granted many fundamental assumptions that are positively false! But almost from the beginning of these errors, the Popes spoke out as with one voice, inveighing against them. Today, as we see these errors bearing evil fruit, many thoughtful Catholics are returning to those Papal documents which condemned these modern errors, to examine what the Popes have said all along about them. Here, in one handy volume, are the best and most famous of those papal denunciations: - On Liberalism (Mirari Vos). Gregory XVI. 1832. - On Current Errors (Quanta Cura). Pius IX. 1864. - The Syllabus of Errors. Pius IX. 1864. - On Government Authority (Diuturnum Illud). Leo XIII. 1881. - On Freemasonry and Naturalism (Humanum Genus). Leo XIII. 1884. - On the Nature of True Liberty (Libertas Praestantissimum). Leo XIII. 1888. - On the Condition of the Working Classes (Rerum Novarum). Leo XIII. 1891. - On Christian Democracy (Graves de Communi Re). Leo XIII. 1901. - Syllabus Condemning the Errors of the Modernists (Lamentabili Sane). St. Pius X. 1907. - On Modernism (Pascendi Dominici Gregis). St. Pius X. 1907. - Our Apostolic Mandate (On the "Sillon"). St. Pius X. 1910. - The Oath Against Modernism. St. Pius X. 1910. - On the Feast of Christ the King (Quas Primas). Pius XI. 1925. - On Fostering True Religious Unity (Mortalium Animos). Pius XI. 1928. - On Atheistic Communism (Divini Redemptoris). Pius XI. 1937. - On Certain False Opinions (Humani Generis). Pius XII. 1950. After this book, the reader will be forced to conclude: "The Popes were right all along!" Only by heeding the advice and counsel of these enlightened Roman Pontiffs will the world be able to cast off its yoke of error and enjoy once more the true freedom Our Lord spoke of when He said, "If you continue in my word, you shall be my disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free." (John 8:31-32).
