The Triumphant Chariot of Antimony
Author: Basil Valentine
Publisher:
ISBN: 9781908388964
Category : Body, Mind & Spirit
Languages : en
Pages : 118
Book Description
In alchemical symbolism Antimony is characterized as a lion (able to devour all metals except the royal Gold). The element itself has had a chequered past, being on occasion considered almost a panacea, and at other times condemned by both church and state. Basilius Valentinus is a shadowy 16th century figure, thought by some to have been Canon of the Benedictine Priory of Saint Peter in Erfurt, Germany. Some of his writings, such as 'The Twelve Philosophical Keys' are as obscure as the author's own origins, but this present work, 'The Triumphant Chariot of Antimony' is a far clearer exposition of Antimony's alchemical properties, intermixed with vibrant Gnosticism and not a little medical perceptiveness. The Annotations of Theodore Kirkringus, (who claims to have known the mysterious author), are equally illuminating. Regarded by many as the first monograph on a chemical element, 'The Triumphal Chariot of Antimony' is an important primary text for all those interested in the 'Royal Art' of Alchemy and the occult wellsprings of modern science.

Triumphal Chariot of Antimony

Pages : 128
Book Description
Basil Valentine was allegedly a 15th-century alchemist. Here he describes the preparation of Antimony, which, in the form of its natural sulfide, was known to the ancients and was used by them as a cosmetic and as a medicine. The book was published in Nurnberg in 1676 and contains treatises by several famous alchemists, including the Benedictine alchemist Basil Valentine, who wrote the featured selection. The engraving shows Mercury, Antimony, and other archetypal powers parading through the countryside in a chariot while an angel looks on from above. The word "triumphal" refers not to the conquering of anything but rather to an ancient pagan procession in which people dressed up in costumes depicting the archetypal forces in nature were carried through the streets in a chariot. For many alchemists, especially Isaac Newton, the metal Antimony became a more potent form of Mercury with which to work transformation. They were fascinated by a property of Antimony to form a cyrstalline star (the Star Regulus) under certain conditions. For alchemists, of course, that symbolized the Quintessence of matter.
