Book Description

The Associational Economy

The Associational Economy PDF Author: Kevin Morgan
Publisher:
ISBN:
Category :
Languages : en
Pages : 0

Book Description
Proposes a model for economic development, the associational model, as a third way between state planning and market-driven approaches to development. The associational model correlates high capabilities in social interaction and communication, particularly in the forms of high trust, learning capacity, and networking competence, with the economic and social success of a firm. As the process of innovation becomes increasingly collaborative, this social capital can be decisive to the outcome. Because much collaboration involves tacit knowledge, that is, knowledge that has not been put into a tradeable or expressible form, successful collaboration requires personal interaction and shared experiences. Accordingly, the importance of less hierarchical corporate governance forms and local and regional milieux emerge. The consequence of these trends is the ascendancy of the region as the locus of learning and collaboration that drive innovation. Four regional case studies are presented: Baden-Württemberg, Emilia-Romagna, Wales, and the Basque Country. The final chapter traces the intellectual roots of the authors' study - the ideas of Schumpeter, Veblen, Marx, and Hayek - and concludes with a sketch of how an associational approach may be implemented by policy makers. The United Nations world water development report, 2017

The United Nations world water development report, 2017 PDF Author: WWAP
Publisher: UNESCO Publishing
ISBN: 9231002015
Category : Education
Languages : en
Pages : 197

Book Description
The United Nations World Water Assessment Programme (WWAP) is hosted and led by UNESCO. WWAP brings together the work of 31 UN-Water Members and 38 Partners to publish The United Nations World Water Development Report, (WWDR) series. The annual World Water Development Reports focus on strategic water issues. UN-Water Members and Partners, all experts in their respective fields, contribute the latest findings on a specific theme. The 2017 edition of the World Water Development Report focuses on 'Wastewater' and seeks to inform decision-makers, inside and outside the water community, about the importance of managing wastewater as an undervalued and sustainable source of water, energy, nutrients and other recoverable by-products, rather than something to be disposed of or a nuisance to be ignored. The report's title - Wastewater: The Untapped Resource - reflects the critical role that wastewater is poised to play in the context of a circular economy, whereby economic development is balanced with the protection of natural resources and environmental sustainability, and where a cleaner and more sustainable economy has a positive effect on the water quality. Improved wastewater management is not only critical to achieving the Sustainable Development Goal on clean water and sanitation (SDG 6), but also to other goals of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

NAFTA and Democracy in Mexico

NAFTA and Democracy in Mexico PDF Author: Pablo Calderón Martínez
Publisher: Routledge
ISBN: 1351110330
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 176

Book Description
After describing NAFTA as ‘the worst trade deal maybe ever signed anywhere’, Donald Trump’s election seemed to represent the final nail in the coffin for North American economic integration. Following a decade of stagnation, however, Trump’s victory presents a timely opportunity to reconsider North American integration and evaluate NAFTA’s democratic track record in Mexico. In this book, Pablo Calderón Martínez presents a detailed analysis of NAFTA’s influence as a political tool for democracy in Mexico. Extending beyond a mere economic or social exploration of the consequences of NAFTA, Calderón Martínez uses a three-tiered analysis based on causality mechanisms to explain how the interactions between internationalisation and democratisation unfolded in Mexico. Calderón Martínez’s analysis demonstrates that Mexico’s internationalisation project under the framework of NAFTA gave shape to, if not made, Mexico’s democratisation process. An original and timely resource for scholars and students interested in understanding how – in cases like Mexico where transitions to democracy are characterised by a finely poised balance of power – small influences from abroad can make significant long-lasting differences domestically.
