Egypt in the Future Tense

Egypt in the Future Tense PDF Author: Samuli Schielke
Publisher: Indiana University Press
ISBN: 0253015898
Category : Political Science
Languages : en
Pages : 281

Book Description
“Illustrates the complex and contradictory impact of Muslim revivalism on the expectations and hopes of Egyptian youth . . . Recommended.” —Choice Against the backdrop of the revolutionary uprisings of 2011–2013, Samuli Schielke asks how ordinary Egyptians confront the great promises and grand schemes of religious commitment, middle class respectability, romantic love, and political ideologies in their daily lives, and how they make sense of the existential anxieties and stalled expectations that inevitably accompany such hopes. Drawing on many years of study in Egypt and the life stories of rural, lower-middle-class men before and after the revolution, Schielke views recent events in ways that are both historically deep and personal. Schielke challenges prevailing views of Muslim piety, showing that religious lives are part of a much more complex lived experience. “This wonderful book brings fresh insights into the anthropology of hope in general and Egypt in particular. It makes a rewarding read for scholars interested in how life and all its ambiguities and aspirations unfold under changing notions of religious commitment, new regimes of circulation, and emerging patterns of consumption.” —American Anthropologist “An altogether innovative, compelling, and sensitive perspective on what is perhaps the most important question facing young people in the Middle East today: how to make a life in rapidly shifting, complex times whose future is uncertain.” —Jessica Winegar, author of Creative Reckonings: The Politics of Art and Culture in Contemporary Egypt

Category : Biography & Autobiography
Languages : en
Pages : 287

Book Description
The story begins with Destiny sitting alone in her prison cell, feeling completely detached. In a solemn reflective state, she mulls over her past actions, bad decisions, and life experiences. Her parents had migrated from Africa to France before she was born, marking the start of a life of movement, spending her childhood living between Africa and France with her family. Despite a visual impairment, Destiny was successful academically. Popular within her community, sociable and creative, she dreamt of becoming a famous singer or actress, but drug and alcohol abuse began to darken her life. This was the beginning of trouble, misadventure, and challenging relationships. Realising that France was no longer the place for her, Destiny finds herself on the move once more, looking to improve her life. An intriguing opportunity arrives when Destiny is offered a dream holiday to an idyllic tropical island. Accepting this offer was a decision that she would forever regret. This personal, moving, and emotional journey ends with an event that was foreshadowed at the start of the book, the arrest of Destiny and her friend at an international airport.

Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament

Cormac McCarthy and the Signs of Sacrament PDF Author: Matthew L. Potts
Publisher: Bloomsbury Publishing USA
ISBN: 1501306561
Category : Literary Criticism
Languages : en
Pages : 235

Book Description
Although scholars have widely acknowledged the prevalence of religious reference in the work of Cormac McCarthy, this is the first book on the most pervasive religious trope in all his works: the image of sacrament, and in particular, of eucharist. Informed by postmodern theories of narrative and Christian theologies of sacrament, Matthew Potts reads the major novels of Cormac McCarthy in a new and insightful way, arguing that their dark moral significance coheres with the Christian theological tradition in difficult, demanding ways. Potts develops this account through an argument that integrates McCarthy's fiction with both postmodern theory and contemporary fundamental and sacramental theology. In McCarthy's novels, the human self is always dispossessed of itself, given over to harm, fate, and narrative. But this fundamental dispossession, this vulnerability to violence and signs, is also one uniquely expressed in and articulated by the Christian sacramental tradition. By reading McCarthy and this theology alongside postmodern accounts of action, identity, subjectivity, and narration, Potts demonstrates how McCarthy exploits Christian theology in order to locate the value of human acts and relations in a way that mimics the dispossessing movement of sacramental signs. This is not to claim McCarthy for theology, necessarily, but it is to assert that McCarthy generates his account of what human goodness might look like in the wake of metaphysical collapse through the explicit use of Christian theology.
