In answer, I showed that he had demanded an Arbitration in September; that that Arbitration was sitting to decide all disputes, at the very time he wrote the above words, and published his circular; and that he had done the very reverse of what he had stated, having refused to allow the Arbitrators to deal with the question of dissolution, and having actually asked them to make him Editor of the People's Journal. He now, in his Second Statement, says, that his clear meaning and resolve was "to accept of nothing but a dissolution." As to the Editorship, he acknowledges now he did ask for it, only, he adds, it is equally true he did not want it. It was his solicitor made him say that. And the honourable motive is as honourably avowed--it was to evade the being in the "power of these men," which means to evade his fulfilling the express requisitions of the Deed, that a retiring partner should offer his share to the others, at a price and on conditions to be fixed by arbitrators, one chosen by the party going out, and one (only) by the two parties staying in.
