Book Description
Adversity is a part of life that we all face at some point. It can be easy to feel overwhelmed and defeated when challenges arise, but what if there was a way to approach adversity with strength and resilience? In this book, we explore the topic of adversity from a Stoic perspective. Stoicism is a philosophy that has been around for thousands of years and has provided individuals with a framework for dealing with life's challenges. At its core, Stoicism teaches individuals to focus on what is within their control, accept what is outside of their control, and cultivate inner strength and resilience. Through ten chapters, we delve deeper into the Stoic philosophy of resilience and explore how it can help us navigate through challenging times. We examine the fundamental principles of Stoicism, such as the dichotomy of control, the power of perception, and the importance of virtue, and how they can be applied to build resilience in the face of adversity. This book is for anyone who wants to learn how to approach adversity with a deeper understanding of themselves, cultivate resilience, and ultimately lead a more fulfilling life. Whether you are facing a personal challenge or looking to develop a stronger sense of self, this book provides valuable insights and practical guidance on how to embrace adversity from a Stoic perspective.

Book Description
The New York Times bestseller! “A warm and loving reflection that, like good bourbon, will stand the test of time.” —Eric Asimov, The New York Times The story of how Julian Van Winkle III, the caretaker of the most coveted cult Kentucky Bourbon whiskey in the world, fought to protect his family's heritage and preserve the taste of his forebears, in a world where authenticity, like his product, is in very short supply. Following his father’s death decades ago, Julian Van Winkle stepped in to try to save the bourbon business his grandfather had founded on the mission statement: “We make fine bourbon—at a profit if we can, at a loss if we must, but always fine bourbon.” With the company in its wilderness years, Julian committed to safeguarding his namesake’s legacy or going down with the ship. Then he discovered that hundreds of barrels from the family distillery had survived their sale to a multinational conglomerate. The whiskey that Julian produced after recovering those barrels would immediately be hailed as the greatest in the world—and soon would be the hardest to find. Once they had been used up, a fresh challenge began: preserving the taste of Pappy in a new age. Wright Thompson was invited to ride along as Julian undertook the task. From the Van Winkle family, Wright learned not only about great bourbon but about complicated legacies and the rewards of honoring your people and your craft—lessons that he couldn’t help but apply to his own work and life. May we all be lucky enough to find some of ourselves, as Wright Thompson did, in Pappyland.

Last to Leave the Field

Last to Leave the Field PDF Author: Timothy J. Orr
Publisher: Univ. of Tennessee Press
ISBN: 1572337931
Category : History
Languages : en
Pages : 345

Book Description
Revealing the mind-set of a soldier seared by the horrors of combat even as he kept faith in his cause, Last to Leave the Field showcases the private letters of Ambrose Henry Hayward, a Massachusetts native who served in the 28th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry. Hayward’s service, which began with his enlistment in the summer of 1861 and ended three years later following his mortal wounding at the Battle of Pine Knob in Georgia, took him through a variety of campaigns in both the Eastern and Western theaters of the war. He saw action in five states, participating in the battles of Antietam, Chancellorsville, and Gettysburg as well as in the Chattanooga and Atlanta campaigns. Through his letters to his parents and siblings, we observe the early idealism of the young recruit, and then, as one friend after another died beside him, we witness how the war gradually hardened him. Yet, despite the increasing brutality of what would become America’s costliest conflict, Hayward continually reaffirmed his faith in the Union cause, reenlisting for service late in 1863. Hayward’s correspondence takes us through many of the war’s most significant developments, including the collapse of slavery and the enforcement of Union policy toward Southern civilians. Also revealed are Hayward’s feelings about Confederates, his assessments of Union political and military leadership, and his attitudes toward desertion, conscription, forced marches, drilling, fighting, bravery, cowardice, and comradeship. Ultimately, Hayward’s letters reveal the emotions—occasionally guarded but more often expressed with striking candor—of a soldier who at every battle resolved to be, as one comrade described him, “the first to spring forward and the last to leave the field.” Timothy J. Orr is an assistant professor of military history at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Book Description
Over the years, rancher Luke Lilavelt built his Window Sash brand from a podunk operation into a full-fledged cattle empire. But he didn't do it through hard work. He added to his holdings through bloody methods only marginally within the law. And most of those methods were carried out by Dave Wall, Lilavelt's troubleshooter. The work hurt Wall's reputation considerably. But Wall knew it wouldn't hurt as much as Lilavelt revealing the secrets he's holding about his brother-in-law's checkered past. So Wall keeps doing the miserly coward's dirty work. But when he's finally had enough and refuses to be Lilavelt's strongarm any longer, Lilavelt makes good on his threat to reveal the secrets, forcing Wall to find a way to stop Lilavelt's plans, or see his brother-in-law end up in prison-or worse.

52 Weeks of Cookies

52 Weeks of Cookies PDF Author: Maggie McCreath
Publisher: Workman Publishing
ISBN: 1942934939
Category : Cooking
Languages : en
Pages : 398

Book Description
The recipes and techniques that one mother used to turn a year of her son’s military service in Iraq into a year of care packages brimming with cookies. Single mother Maggie McCreath couldn’t decide which was worse: the fact that her only son (not yet twenty-one) was off to war in Iraq for the second time or the fact that they had only five days to prepare. Even more frightening, she knew that he would be part of the Surge and, as a paratrooper in the 82nd Division of the Army, the tip of the Spear. What she did not know—what she couldn’t even bear to consider—was how this deployment would end, both for her son and for his brothers in arms, whom she had come to know and love as her own. So she turned to the one pastime that had always brought her solace: baking. Filled with delicious, original cookie recipes, 52 Weeks of Cookies recounts a mom’s unique methods of coping during her son’s deployment. With plenty of sugar cookies but no sugarcoating, 52 Weeks of Cookies is an honest, uplifting story of family love during a crisis, with all the fear, grief, laughter, gratitude, and joy that come with it. “When her 20-year-old son was deployed to Iraq with just a few days’ notice, Maggie McCreath desperately searched for her own mission to cope with the worry. She found it with the help of flour, sugar, vanilla and lots of love.” —Today
