Global change involves complex and far-reaching variations in the Earth’s systems, and satellite observations have been widely used in global change studies. Over the past five decades, Earth observation has developed into a comprehensive system that can conduct dynamic monitoring of the land, the oceans and the atmosphere at the local, regional and even global scale. At the same time, although a large number of Earth observation satellites have been launched, very few of them are used in global change studies. This book is dedicated to the study of climate change with aspects of defining segments in the indicated area. The fact is that it is highly important to provide contributions for an investigation into this area. Earth observation studies embrace the contribution of a variety of international institutions and entities providing efforts of environmental protection for reducing and minimising the Earths climate change consequences. In the meantime, scientific outcomes of Earth monitoring with a reflection of segments affecting the environment and ecological condition of the investigated area are demonstrated. There is reflected efforts of climate change within the framework of states, international institutions and entities in order to minimise a change in the Earths temperature. Attempts have been demonstrated in the area provided by early and recent contributions within the Kyoto Protocol and Paris Agreement with commitments for interested sites of participant countries. In the meantime, the contents of the book include the investigations of authors and contributions of other scientists, researches and specialists in climate change. It provides additional information in understanding the process. There is some answer as to how and where there are sensitive areas to be considered in the measurement and observation stage of investigations, which could be helpful in decision making by authorities. We do hope materials that the materials presented in the book chapters will be useful for specialists and authorities involved in the study and use of outcomes for climate changes based on Earth observations. The title of this meeting was ‘Optical Remote Sensing of Terrestrial Surfaces: New Sensors, Advanced Algorithms, and the Opportunity for Novel Applications’. It aimed at assembling representatives from the policy maker, remote sensing research and end-user communities, as well as from national and international space agencies and aerospace industries. To better understand the various processes and interactions that govern the Earth system and to determine whether recent human-induced changes could ultimately de-stabilise its dynamics, both natural system variability and the consequences of human activities have to be observed and quantified. In this context, the European Space Agency (ESA) published in 2006 the document “The Changing Earth: New Scientific Challenges for ESA's Living Planet Programme” as the main driver of ESA’s new Earth Observation (EO) science strategy. The document outlines 25 major scientific challenges covering all the different aspects of the Earth system, where EO technology and ESA missions may provide a key contribution. In this framework, and aiming at enhancing the ESA scientific support towards the achievement of “The Challenges”, the Agency has launched in 2008 a new initiative – the Changing Earth Science Network – to support young scientists to undertake leading-edge research activities contributing to achieve the 25 scientific challenges of the LPP by maximising the use of ESA data. The initiative is implemented through a number of research projects proposed and led by early-stage scientists at post-doctoral level for a period of two years which are summarized in this SpringerBrief. These projects undertake innovative research activities furthering into the most pressing issues of the Earth system, while exploiting ESA missions data with special attention to the ESA data archives and the new Earth Explorer missions.
