This book is addressed to school-age care staff and suggests they rethink their attitudes about the behavior of the children under their care. Ideas were generated by workshop participants about ways to promote misbehavior, as a way of gaining insights into encouraging positive behaviors. The following six key elements of a school-age care program emerged from this exercise: (1) children's basic needs; (2) physical environment; (3) activities and schedules; (4) social groupings; (5) rules; and (6) consequences. Addressing these six key elements is viewed as a preventive approach, and the importance of initially considering the first four elements is emphasized. Examples are provided to illustrate how this approach works in practice. Beginning with the first four elements sets a very positive tone for a program. It stresses that it is the climate which is being controlled, not the children.
